personally, i just can't stand rap but i do have respect for the groups that talk about important stuff, and arent just saying shit to get them money. I do agree that rap on mtv and much music is definitly shit, but what isnt shit on those channels, or in mainstream? i think it is pretty closeminded to say that all rap is crap when you've only heard mainstream shit, because you can say that about any type of music. knowledge is power.

I like rap. I don't like sheeetballs that jump when the puppeteers in corporate say so and parade around like they know something. But I like rap. Two different worlds. Just my vote for rap before the thread dies.

The only rap that I love is tupac- I haven't found one song that is degrading to women or that he sings only about his huge mansions and how he pops the crystaaaaahl and has his escalades (which he didnt, mind you)

dear mama, unconditional love, and keep ya head up are good (look up the lyrics)

Then again there is a big diference between 1996 and 2004, now every single rap song is the same tune, practically the same words with "lil this guy" and "lil that guy" all about having sex with the girls in the club, and getting drunk, all aimed at teens with raging hormones who listen to anything on mtv. just my two cents

What about that song that goes: every other city we go every other video no matter where I go I see the same hoes. I'm not sure of what the song is called. But it sounds pretty degrading to me.

of course some rap is degrading. some rock is degrading, some of all types of music are degrading to some extent. but just because a few songs are dosnt mean they all are. maybe those ones are just the popular ones, but don't try to put down an entire genre just because you don't like a few songs. that is flat out ridiculous.

maybe just the good stuff is to complex for you to grasp properly. i mean black thought is a genuis. most of his lyrics are incredible. the way he manipulates words might be akward to some people, which is why they would blow him off.

i've heard a lot of rap, not just the commercial (gangsta) rap. Maybe i was exaggerating, but i just don't like rap/hip hop. I think i'm open minded, i listen to Alternative Rock, Brit Pop, Experimental Rock, Indie Rock, Garage, Folk, Noise Rock, Space Rock, Psychedelic Rock, New Wave, Classic Rock, Blues Rock, British Invasion, Folk Rock, Hard Rock, Rock 'n Roll, Country Rock, Surf, Singer-Songwriter, Ambient, Intelligent Dance Music, Minimalism, Punk, Proto Punk, Post-Punk, Indian Music, and i can appreciate Classical Music or Jazz from time to time.

Most of what I'm going to say has been hammered over before. The majority of stuff that I've read has said that they don't like rap because it's only drugs, sex, and repitition...well that's what rock and roll is. Looking at the Stones or AC/DC, it's all drugs, sex, and really one basic sound (this is more about AC/DC than the Stones, especially when they got into their countryfied/Paint It Black period). Arguments about rap, are just arguments about pop music in general. They take a hook from the song and just run with it, that's what all pop is about. Yeah, you'll find good stuff...but that's pop's whole deal. I mean...it's not just about selling an image. All bands have been selling an image since television and the concert itself. Velvet Underground is fucking brilliant, but they would have not been the same band if it hadn't been how they projected themselves.

I'm just posting in two parts...it's a lot easier to stomach that way, I hope. Anyways, you can definately find rap/ hip-hop that has a helluva merit and articism (don't think that's a word.) Most of them have already been said. Outkast, Tribe Called Quest, Jay-Z, The Roots, Nightmares On Wax, and Jurassic 5. Art and music know no boundaries. Genre and era don't confine talent. Regardless of what it is, good music is good music and everything else can go to hell.

what it all comes down to i think is that RADIO is what's bad, no matter what form of popular music. with such acts like korn, linkin park, puddle of mudd, good charlotte (who are on constant rotation), can you honestly tell me that today's rock music is just as good as it was even to as recent as 10 years ago? radio really gives a misrepresentation to what a style of music is about, especially to someone who's trying to broaden their tastes. for example for rap/hip hop... im sure someone has posted saying that there are many elements that form hip hop. rap is just one element of it and it's something you do. hip hop is a culture and what you hear is "hip hop music." what i've noticed about those who are hard headedly opposed to "rap" is that they see artists like tupac, jay-z, biggie, as musicians. who said anything about them playing any instruments? these artists are the lyricists not the drummer, guitarist, or dj (remind you acts like the roots actually do play their own instruments). anyway that's just one part of hip hop. hip hop also goes into break beats, turntablism, beat production, etc. all of which don't need an emcee, but is still qualified as hip hop. portishead, dj shadow, sneaker pimps, etc. are all rooted into hip hop by a single element just like rap. this is hip hop music, not a single act of rap.

oh and that's whole other example of radio screwing with you, is in terminology. the radio is what branded hip hop music as just rap. maybe it's because you can't fully represent hip hop through the radio and pay your bills, by only playing what the industry tells you to play, on top of that. but that should be a whole new thread.

oh and skelter (and anyone who is interested in having an open mind), since you are a fan of jazz let me recommend for you to give madlib's "shades of blue" album, pete rocks "petestrumentals" album, gang starr's "step into the arena" and guru's "jazzmatazz I, II, & III" a try. if you could only pick just one i highly recommed madlib to give a try

most popular rap sucks.. but i did see this rap video on mtv2 that had amazing lyrics; lyrics that actually take talent to write. don't know who the artist was though... i never listen to rap so i can't assume it all sucks... some people enjoy rap, some people don't... no point in arguing about a matter of opinion.

I think calling close-minded a person who says that all rap songs sound same ..and the song meaning and expressions are the same. It´s sad but true ....

Maybe I'm just really tired, but can anyone translate this for me?

Skelter, you do have a really broad range of listening styles, which is awesome. I guess just every style isnt for everyone:D.
