Public transit. The bus. The trolley. The metro. Whatever you choose to call it, the experience is the same -- it's just sitting in a metal tube with students, miscreants, the elderly, and the homeless. People get on, ride a brief time, disembark, and never grace your eyes again. How is it that I can relate the experience of riding the bus in such a vividly accurate way? No, I don't ride the bus, but I do talk to the office help from time to time. The lives of the destitute usually don't concern me, but a kernel of intriguing information caught my eye. A lot of women do, in fact, ride the bus; women who are impressed by a major league player like the most astute of my students. Yet the time frame presents a serious challenge -- with the very short amount of time one actually rides between their pick-up point and their destination, starting a conversation seems impossible. Fret not, future players -- I have decided to go slumming to provide you with the tips you need to crack this most challenging of nuts and get some good bus stop conversation going.

Keep an eye open for accessories

The quickest way to break the ice and start a bus stop conversation is to engage a woman on her field of play. Since she's not driving, she's probably reading, watching or consuming something. Picking up on her affinity for Hemingway or her love of Skittles is a great way to endear yourself to her personality quirks. Instead of being just some guy on the bus, you can now express yourself to be a fellow-something. Since women are not usually interested in being approached while waiting for the number nine across town, creating immediate intimacy at any level will be important to getting your foot in the door and getting her phone number.
    Ask a bus-related question

One little tidbit that you have in common with your potential target when starting bus stop conversation is that you're both riding this marvel of urban planning called the bus. The problem with most public transit schedules is that they are exceedingly cryptic, warding off anyone but the most seasoned of public travelers. As such, asking a schedule- or route-related question such as "How often does the number nine run on Saturdays?" or "Does the number nine drop off at Smithton Street? It doesn't say on the schedule" is a great way to start a conversation with a woman. Asking a question allows her to give you info about herself, which puts her in the more dominant position of the conversation... at least in her mind. This approach lowers her guard since you're not being overtly aggressive and domineering. Thank you, Dr. Freud.
    Ask her where she's going

This may sound obvious, but it can't be reinforced enough. Women love to talk about themselves in any setting. The bus is no different. During a bus stop conversation, asking a woman where she's going is a good icebreaker that lends itself to a lengthy conversation about her, what she's doing, what she's into, etc. You may just find out another avenue to attack. Is she a veterinary assistant? You love pets. Is she an English grad student? Ask her what her favorite novel is. The possibilities once a woman starts talking about herself are nearly limitless. Just keep the conversation on her and you'll end up at her seven digit stop.

I find it hilarious that you think the only people that use public transport are homeless and poor, this may come to a shock to you, but there are a few people that actually CHOOSE to ride public transport, wether it be for environmental, convenience or financial reasons. also there are a few people that for whatever reason choose not to, or are not able to drive.

i can see the benefits of using public transport to meet people, but wonder what qualifies you to give advice, when you consider yourself to be slumming it by riding the bus...... do you have a desire to pick up homeless crack-whores and drunks ?

I don't know, maybe i'm just dumb and don't understand something, but if i'm in the bus, it's 8 AM i'm going to school and some random person starts a conversation i wouldn't be that interested. But hey, maybe i am the only person that uses the bus to get somewhere because i need to go to school, date, party or something else.
