yeah true to your beliefs but not to every1s the bible doesnt say any thing about homosexuality just the new stuff that was writen by people who said god had spoken to them but if that was true how come he doesnt come to me and tell me im wrong to act on my feeling if he was that strong on saying it to them way does he not come to people now and broadcast it to every1 on the earth then i would repent. if he exists he can do that can't he cus he doesnt want any1 going to hell. he should know by now people can't just go on words in a book.

 

Plus the Good News Bible is like the "Phantom Menace" of Bibles.

I think you are being a bit too presumptious. I am not gay. I was raised in a christian home, going to church multiple times a week, doing bible study, etc..I know quite a bit about scripture. I am in no way bashing religion. I am telling you that it is hypocrisy to focus in on the very small parts of the bible that deal with homosexuality and ignore the things in your life. If you want to attach a stigma to homosexuality, than as justice would follow you would attach that same stigma to divorce (which some people do, and I hope you don't condone that. An abusive relationship and some religious nuts would have the person stay in it because "God says to")

By the way, if I were gay, I don't think I would be especially impressed with you for saying you would "tolerate" me. Thats pretty much a given. Nothing special there buddy.

and Bobbi, yes the bible does say things about homosexuality.

 

This is a fair point. Your average Christian ignores vast chunks of the Bible when it suits. Aside from a brief crazy part of Leviticus, the Bible condemns lustful sex of any kind, gay or straight. It argues that sex is for reproduction, which naturally biases against gays, but it's pretty anti straight-sex too.

 

Not that it all really matters, there has been some huge upheavels in straight society in the last couple of decades.

In developed western nations, the average age straight couples get married was roughly around 20 yrs old some 40, 50 years ago, today its around 30.

So following the "no sex before marriage" rule was easier back then, now, is it even possible to follow that rule if one is not going to get married till there 30s?

Is it even healthy? Those that are still strict with that rule will probably rush to get married and have kids early 20s, nowadays that means you are going to be in a worse financial position than the couple that waits till their 30s. Nowadays it would be much smarter for them to build a career, save some money before the marriage, mortgage, kids thing. Better for the kids too, more likely you'll be able to afford sending them to better schools.

More successful career woman are leaving it too late to have kids get to there mids 30s can't or dont want to find a man and are turning to IVF and sperm donors, the no sex before marriage rule kind of irrelevant to that group who technically don't have to have sex to concieve

Doctrine set out in the good book is a set of rules that are static, will never change, its getting increasing ridiculous to try and enforce some of those rules, some don't even apply now

 

Indeed. I'd say we should rework the Bible completely if I thought that there was any market for a forward-looking religion rather than a reactionary one. But it's not been my experience that people follow religions, so much as they use religion to support their existing prejudices. This is why the Bible's survived so long: because you can use it to justify doing or not doing pretty much anything!

Just saw a great documentary about this called For The Bible Tells Me So.

 

I'm no Christian but even I know that Christianity's belief is that through having faith in Christ, you will be rewarded after death. All it takes is faith. That's all Jesus required. So why the FUCK do millions of folks who claim to be Christians believe otherwise?

 

You also have to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and to love everyone and I mean everyone unconditionally.

 

Hmmm, it always seemed to me it was about repression with the stricter types, in the mad rush to get laid they married earlier, ended up with someone they didnt want to be with and have to fight extra hard now to fight urges cos they've only ever been with one partner.

Then they see one group in society running around having oodles of fun getting their rocks off, wouldn't that piss you off.


Going through your entire life only being with one partner, to me thats one of the scariest concepts in life. Except those that are smitten by their first love and stay with them, very rare but very romantic.

I'm not saying go out root everything that moves, but at least a 1/2 dozen partners in your life time, geesh

 

While I see your point, at least with an atheist you know it's them talking. It's a lot harder to be an asshole when you haven't got some book telling you're awesome for it.

What I meant was that you know that, if they have certain values, they've arrived at them themselves. Of course, there's limits on this, since we're all subject to social pressures that sculpt our opinions. But it's not possible for an atheist to "blame" their existing beliefs on their religious upbringing.

 

what i'm saying comes from experience, in my life an athiest never told me to die, or go to hell etc. I know lots of people who are religious that say they hate gays.

 

I know people who aren't religious who say that too

 

and I know people who are religious who don't

 

yeah but gay people don't look up straight videos and say ewww thats gross go and kill your self some people do kill them selves becus of people like that its so sad that they sit there on their comupter tellin people to kill themselves it needs to stop. every 4 hour and 35 mins some1 kills them selves from a homophobe i hope they are happy with themselves cus they played a part in some1s death. that has to make them want to stop cus it would make me stop

 

1) they are one of a kind, i have tons of athiest friends and am part of an athiest forum. They always defend gays when they are attacked. Athiests also don't do this shit:
