are there any protein rich veggies besides soybean? also, should a simple multi-vitamin take care of my needs? I'd pretty much be removing just chicken and the occasional red meat from my diet, so are there anything i'd be lacking? thanks,
Yes, legumes and nuts are good sources of protein. Also....MUSHROOMS!!!! They basically ARE meat(in vegetarian form). Mushrooms can have up to 95 % protein...The rest is water and minerals (including Iron) the only thing I don't know are if they have B vitamins Now...about supplements, a quote from Ryupower on a different thread: Note that a vegetarian diet needs a lot of Vitamin A ( to keep everything together) and B. But those up there are a way to get 100% (or more) of the vitamins/minerals you need if you don't feel like perfectly monetoring your vitamin/mineral intake. Don't forget Iodine! I don't know what some people have against supplements...it's like they want to get AROUND taking them. Gee....it's not that bad! >.>
Potatoes, surprisingly enough, have a lot of protein. Especially if you eat the skins too. They go well with the legume side of things. Corn is high in it too, as is wheat, barley, all grains in fact. Chickpeas are a great sourse of protein too.
I greatly recommend trying to get your nutrients from natural dietetic adjustments rather than vitamins. The ingredients in vitamins are often less well-absorbed, and when they are indeed absorbed, you'll often get a dosage that's much higher than what your body finds necessary. There have been risks associated with consumption of quantities excessing what your daily recommended intake of things is. No red meat or chicken? Easy to replace what you're no longer getting from these things. Know why? Meat contains basically nothing. All meat contains is animal protien (much less healthy than vegetable protien, by the way), vitamin A, some minerals depending on the animal's diet, and... that's basically it. Meat contains absolutely no complex carbohydrates, no fiber, and barely any vitamins. And, actually, unless you're planning on doing some sort of body building, looking for an increase in muscle mass, you'll find that the amino acids you take in throughout the day are processed within your body into all the protien you need. People are extremely concerned about protien, but the fact is, most people (in the US, at least - unsure about other countries) consume WAYYY too much protien, causing health problems! Two cups of soymilk a day contain all the vitamin B12 you need, tons of vitamin A, lots of complete protien, and other healthiness. Even if you're not planning to become vegan and aren't planning on removing cow's milk from your diet, soymilk is a yummy and healthy thing to drink.
well, it's true that your can get more than what your body needs (I'm talking about supplements), but it doesn't damage your body (unless the container sais so.).So there's no risk in taking supplements. Instesd of my body breaking down I got the results I posted on my last post. Oh...and yeah soymilk is good stuff.^^ I think it has more protein than normal milk...not sure, I'll check sometime.
This is getting old. You don't need anything to survive. Breathatarian is the way to go if you want to stay fit and healthy for hundreds of years.
Yea.. i was goin to say about b vitamins... been veggie since i was a kid.. and never has any deficiency problms... have taken multi vitamins now and then when my mamaa used to get worried n buy them.. but if your goin completly veggie remember to check that they dont have animal deriv's in them .. i think if you just eat a wide range of diff foods then ya'l be ok .. beans n pulses are really nice to cook with for protien.. you can use lentils to make things like chilli instead of minced meat ... and lots of green veggies as they have lots of good vitamins in them. I just recently startd takin B complex tho.. b'coz my diet went really wooblie for a while.. n when i broke my vertabreas they said i was low in som B's.. i never knew mushrooms had so much protien ... but i dont like them anyway (cept the magical variety).. they remind me of kidney when you bite into it and its squeeky n rubbery .. ableeeeb.. shudder .. prob thats frm when i was a kid tho.. n one of the last time i ate meat wasx when my gran forced me to eat a steak n kidney pie, that she said was 'good for me' .. i cried all the way through.. tryin to swallow whole mouthfuls so i didnt have to chew that putrid stuff.. n then pucked for 3 hours .... chuckle... think thats when my fam finally realised that i wasnt just being aukqard (HOW do you spell that word?) and let me be
lol...yes, mushrooms have A LOT of protein, here in Germany there's a saying:Mushrooms are a vegetarian version of meat. I don't really like biting on them either, but I got used to them, and LOVE 'em now (sorta like salad,-took me a long time to get used to them). And you spell the word 'awkward', I know...it looks awkward, but that's how you write it...
There's an ad here in Aus too that goes "Mushrooms.... meeeeaat for vegetarians!" It kind of annoys me, I don't find mushrooms "meaty" at all.
I've been feeling rather achy lately... It's getting better though. I haven't been eating a whole lot lately...
And you spell the word 'awkward', I know...it looks awkward, but that's how you write it...[/QUOTE] hahaha.. ok awkward .. will try to remember.. thankya v much
