This thread is about those crazy baldheads that just don't get it. That go by what society tells them they should be and such. Anyways, I absoutly am irritated when people come up to me and tell me "Your supposed to use wax" or.."My brother did those and just combed them" or "Arnt you supposed to like do this, or that" Or the oh so disrespectful comment "He's trying to get dreads." So this thread, is for you to post the crazy, funny, or stupid things people say to you about your locks. As well as all those comments, I get things like: "Whens the last time you washed your hair?" "Can I touch it?" "Why are you doing that?" "You look like crap!" "your hair is so cool!" "how long is it going to take for that to really happen?" "why don't you really get "dreads" " Some of these things agrivate I. Sall good though, I laugh at them so hard. Today some girls wanted to take pictures of me, and this wasnt the first time! haha
I mentioned about getting dreads to someone today and they were like 'You know you can't wash your hair with dreads'. Quick correction on that part!
Have you finally gotten the courage to stop pleasing your parents every needs? Anyways, I get alot of crap, especially since I'm going Neglect route. " You know, Nature isn't REALLY going to dread your hair like you say. You're just a crazy Hippie, you should use some wax." I get that one from a certain group alot. " Save your Hippie shit for the Holidays, I'll let you punch me in the face if you ACTUALLY grow dreads through just not combing.... Oh I forgot, you don't fight! Hahaha" ( Somehow that's funny to people?) " I'm sorry, but you won't look "cool" with dreads." " Your hair looks absolutely HORRIBLE." Then there are the occasional people that like it. Alot of the time there's a chick nearby always trying to touch my hair. I get a girl that always says " Hi John, Cool hair " and sometimes people say " Dude, you're going to grow some badass ( meaning good) dreads." So a bit of both; but mostly just looks.
Have you finally gotten the courage to stop pleasing your parents every needs? Oh yes, I'm letting my hair grow to wherever it starts tangling and then I'll happily start off my dreads! I've been doing a lot of sneaking around lately, let me tell you, my parents never were best happy with my political stance and whatever, but hey, my life!
I've had waaaaay more good things said to me than bad, but its still early days I guess haha. I notice a lot of you americans seem to have a harder time than here in england... or I dunno maybe thats just coz there are more americans on this forum than brits..
"did you put mud in your hair?" *long pause* "uhhh... no..." "because that's how you get real dreads" "stop talking."
I suggest to you watching and actually Mediating on the words of this song. Watch the video, but most importantly the true message he's trying to get through. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ikzQmC3S-mE Props on finally beginning to be your own person. My parents and I have very similar political views, but not so much on anything else. They're extremely dissapointed for my plans for my future, but hey, like Ziggy says, " got to be true to myself." Namaste, John.
It is quite possible to be your own person and please your parents, my parents are pretty easy going luckily! I get more bother at school than at home. Just as long as i get vaguely good grades and don't let them know about some of my, uh, habits, I'll be fine!
I used to get "have you combed your dreads out" when my dreads started to become undone after the initial backcombing "Those aren't real dreads" wtf are "real" dreads anyways Most people are too scared to come up and ask me about my hair anyways, apparently I always look angry and intimidating.
I love when people look at me in the halls and I stare back into their eyes. They fall into the floor like an ant. Some people say I have hair like a lion. I take that as a huge complement.
i always get "oh so you combed your dreads out?" or "do you still have dreads?". i have never gotten a compliment, ever. thats ok though lol, i get lots of support from you guys
I think, by far, the most bizarre question I have ever got thus far has been: "Do you do that every morning?" Whaaaat? I've also gotten the "Do you use ______* ?" *honey, mud, beeswax, wax obviously, elmer's glue, gel, SPIT. Where do people get these ideas? D= But majority of people have a very positive reaction to me and my dreads, I often get "OMG how do you do that?" "I've always wanted dreadlocks!" "Your hair is beautiful/gorgeous/badass/awesome/etc." And just in general, a lot of people randomly approach me and start asking about me, ask to get a picture, comment my 'aura', and all sorts of nice things =] rofl. Yeah right. You need to visit California. =P
i get a hell of alotta complimemnts usualy shoutted outta passin car windows or whatever, its pretty rare to get any negative comments except from my parents..lol oh and today there was a homeless dude talking to himself couldnt understand much of what he was sayin the only word that came out clear enough to understand was "hair" but he musta said hair 15 times in the 30 seconds it toook to pass him on the street i do get "is all that your real hair" alot though
lol slang yea u just reminded me bout a couple times getting questions like "how often do youy have to redo them" and "how longs your hair when you take them out"..like they assume u just take em out and put em back in every couple weeks or somethin...
I've gotten the lion's mane thing several times. This is my favorite compliment of all. I work at a nursing home and the old people really don't understand how my hair works. They think I have to do it every day and that if I washed and combed my hair it wouldn't look so terrible. I love old people! Others tell me my hair is beautiful but these people generally think I'm a girl. "Wow what beautiful curls! Have you got a husband yet?" hahaha
I have been going to work without combing my hair for one month now. Apart from the daily "Get a haircut", I have had one or two bizarre comments. I told my boss what I was doing because I was getting fed up of laughing off his ridiculous comments all the time. His reply to the news of my plans for locks? "Oh, we'll have a white ****** working here then?" followed by "Will the nits be knitting them?" I told one girl of my plans, and she went into hysterics. That was the one which made me feel most ridiculed. Another old friend who I told my plans to last weekend, looked at me with eyes of sympathy and simply said "Seriously?" What is up with these people?
man I got loads of weird questions. like if I had to put them in every morning, or if I took them OFF every night. and my mama was always trying to take me to the barber. but I've spent the last 6 months as an almost-baldy and I've sort of figured out how the natural balds are feeling. I think it's all the cold air to your head. um... and when you've got really short hair, locks are pretty much the polar opposite and you get that funny attracted feeling, although in most people this is negative. in me it's a positive attraction because I'm still a dread head, just an almost bald one, slowly becoming a dready again. it was kind of funny to step into their perspective for a while, but then also a bit sad.
I'm lucky I suppose because of my age I don't get talked down to at all. I would imagine members of my family and friends probably make comments behind my back when I'm not around but I'm big enough and ugly enough to not let that bother me. I am also fortunate that I run my own business that is known for it's creativity and most of our clients see my dreads and flesh tunnels etc as part of that creative process. Take all of the negitive comments with a pinch of salt. When you do something like dread your hair you are putting yourself in the firing line and people are bound to react. Take the time to educate these people and show them that having dreads shows commitment and patience. Enjoy your dreads, enjoy the attention and enjoy life mamos
ive had mine for over a year and quite honestly i dont think anyone has even noticed yet.. lol (i keep them pulled back and wear a ball cap when im at work, which is about the only time im in public) i work with a buncha country hick types so im sure when they notice something will be said.. although they never really have said much to dilligaf, but i think thats cause there afraid she will kick there ass lol... the black folk call her "jamaica" or "lil janice" (even though janice didnt have dreads.go figure),.. but no real stupid statements or questions from them as of yet..
"Is that all your hair?" "....really?" ALL the time. Some people are funny, and give me crazy looks. Lots of people smile. It's really amusing to see people's reactions when I'm riding my bike around town on errands and whatnot. Adults riding bicycles is majorly unusual around here anyway. Here I am, riding a cruiser, almost always in a skirt or dress (always patchy), and usually with my hair piled and tied on top of my head to keep it out of the way. lol, people don't know what to think.
