Hey friend, I just got mine done around a month ago. They were done by backcombing, I have thin, oily hair so it was really my best option. They are loose with fly aways. some are fat, some are thin. I get annoyed sometimes, but then I just throw 'em under a bandanna and I am good to go. Right now they look like backcombed hair but I know in a couple months they will look better. Dreads are a great test of patience. They are a journey, you get to see yourself in a new light with each passing day of improved growth. Please do not worry, Iknow your hair is going to look great. You have an ideal situation, thick, curly hair is great for dreads. I am sorry about the bad run of luck with your first try but just remember that there is always a good with every bad. I am really excited for you. Just keep on keepin' on, you'll do great! namaste

just leave them alone, your hair takes time to lock. 4 days ago i back combed my hair and i was kind of worried cause i had no idea what i was doing, although my hair isnt dreaded yet, ive learned from reading there is no secret, just leave your hair alone and enjoy the low maintnance, i have so far! and if the way your hair looks bothers you maybe wear some sort of hat?

because ya waxed, i might suggest washijn lil more often and agressively then some suggested here the 1st month or 2
it will dread from where your at now, just as it starts, feel arounbd for areas clumpin together and seperate 1 clump frpom another, they'll tighten round themselves week by week
dont absess over the process, let it surprise ya 1 day when u suddenly notice how much they matured

    Thanks =D
I still never figured out what kind of hair I had though >> I'm russian, polish and british on my moms side and portuguesse, native american, and african american on my dads side though none of them have hair like mine ><

oh and one question, is it ok if my backcombed dreads are loose and easy to pull or possibly come out >> The first times I backcombed them they were tough and painful to pull out but these ones are loose and i could pull them out easily probally. I don't know but it seems everytime I back comb them again (hopefully this is the last time) they get weaker >>

yeah you should leave em alone once you have backbomed otherwise it will damage your hair and actually undo what you have already started.
Dreads get looser before they tighten up, but if you want to wrap some of them with wool or threads it can help the weaker ones to form.
just dont use elastic bands, those things are evil.

I always think the more you do to dreads, they less beautiful they become.
just leave em alone to work their magic :)
you look like you have the right type of hair to do em, its just gona take a while

yes, wash it if it's itchy. usually means it's dirty.

wash it gently. massage the scalp the most, but gently squeeze soap through to the tips too. and lather up REALLY good with super hot water, as you probably still have some wax in it.

wet the dreads thoroughly. dilute your dr. bronner's if it's the liquid kind. pour the soapy stuff all over your head and lather up good. but gently so you don't loose too many knots. rinse VERY VERY well. rinse some more.

wrap head in a towel to soak out as much moisture as possible. do some palmrolling maybe... gently though... rip apart the ones that are trying to eat each other.... and don't stuff them into a tam or headband until completely dry. you don't want mold!!

    should be fine!

thats how my hair looks now, The knots are pretty much out or loose. are they supposed to do that? is this going in the right path? i rebackombed it a couple of times ut everytime I do that and fall asleep (I dont use a durag anymore) I wake up and they are loose again. any estimate to how long before they tighten up?

It has been a month a week, and 2 days. I have been washing with dr bronners every 2 weeks and this is how my hair looks now. Any guesstimate to how much longer it will take to lock? any more advice to what I should do? I haven't combed it or brushed it, and I play with it sometimes but latetly I just haven't been touching it.

Dude your hair is gonna lock super tight. Those curls are ridiculous, all that hair will eventually just wrap around eachother. As far as how long it will take, just listen to the Beatles and LET IT BE!!! Shouldn't be long now, and when I say that, I guess in my mind i'm figuring 6 mo/1 yr. But in the scheme of things thats certainly not long.
