see, if the assignment was "find some local volunteer project that interests you, get documentation you did ten hours there, then write about your experience." that would be a whole other ballgame. photos and whatever optional. done right, such an assignment could be an amazing learning opportunity for the students, but done wrong as it probably is in most cases, it will just lead to more frustration with the education system.
We had the same thing in high school. Had to do community service every weekend. It was an awesome experience. It inspired me to do more community service outside of school, really united the people in our class, and was pretty much awesome. We did some intense stuff too. Climbed up mountains to bring stuff to these native folk, went to orphanages for the entire days and cleaned shit, changed diapers, and played with the kids. Went to work with retarded kids, and cleaned some more shit while racing them around in their wheelchairs. So yeah, get off your ass, stop making excuses, and make this shit happen. You'll have fun
im against the community hours thing to, we dont have to make a scrap book but its still irrelivant to graduating school. I think volenteering should be an optional class, and if you do say 100 hours or something you get a credit.
 I guess the community service didn't teach you much about political correctness, eh? but yeah, as long as what you're doing is interesting to you then it's going to be a great time. but it's safe to assume that not all schools have their kids "volunteer" for cool shit, and then there's paperwork, which is what the OP is really complaining about.
Well, they're retarded... that's what they are. I'm pretty sure that most of them have grown to terms with the fact that they are retarded. ...but yeah, the paperwork is just an assignment. A fun assignment too, you can actually explore a new topic and maybe even generate some good ideas. The connecting old and young people through music idea sounds beautiful. It's a shame not to do it just because of a paper.
At my HS it was called a senior project. I cheated on mine and said I did a lot of things I didn't. Only reason I graduated was because I went to rehab though. I got lucky.
I think the paperwork is a good idea, I would hate to work my ass off and find that some idiots lied about doing it and passed anyway... Everything infuriates teenagers. All "volunteer" means is that you are not getting paid.
We had to do volunteer work at the school or community service if we wanted to go to prom as juniors. If community service was required to graduate, we'd all be screwed here. In a tiny town, the community service opportunities are all taken by people who are doing it as a sentence. Number one reason I couldn't find any decent scholarships.
sometimes you have to do things you don't like to get what you want..that is the payoff for you getting a diploma..gotta do, what you gotta do. Have fun with your project, I am sure it will come out nice and you will be proud..it is worth it.
dude you should just move to a different school my school you just gotta do 10 hours of community service. or just do the project. and talk to some seniors from last year and ask them about it. see what they did it on. it might be easier then it sounds.
I haven't read all of this thread but I felt that I had to post after reading this. Well done greycells. It is pathetic to see so many people whining about having to do something, possibly physical, outside of the classroom. What the fuck is wrong with you lazy, selfish whiners? I for one, find the idea of having to help in the community to be as important a part of education as memorising stupid 'facts' and formulae, if not more so. I think our schools should be encouraging people to get involved in community-based projects and giving students some life-experiences rather than turning out diploma wielding exam-passers. Grow up, is right.
Hmm I didn't have to do that. I only had to fight the attendance policy. I did have to do community service when I was in the I.B. program....but I thought it was fun.
Now that I've read the rest of the thread, I'm relieved to see that a few more people think that this is a good idea. In fact, at a glance, it seems like the majority of people over 20 have no problem with this, while those under 20 are whinging. Now, isn't that unusual.
Oh, you know teens. If it doesn't involve cynicism and Pop'n It While It's Hot (or whatever the devils cool now) they aren't into it. With a little more life experience they begin to grow and understand the need for this kind of thing. And I was kidding of course. I'm hipper then that.
ok then after reading everyones remarks, i have a question to ask you. can you guys volunteer some time to me to heko me write a childrens book. some ideas would be helpful. ill do it, but i need some help.
