As you might well know, Mr.Buckley passed today. Back and forth between libertarian and conservative, he defied labels. The man almost single-handedly resurrected conservatism in america. Before he passed he turned against the war in Iraq. I enjoyed his writing style and passion(the clip of him threatening Gore Vidal is priceless), though i certainly didn't agree with all his positions and he was a bit of an elitist(old money will do that to ya), he at least used his intellect to push his agenda and his wit was legendary. RIP thoughts?
He was an establishment CFR shill pushing the neoconservative agenda all the way 'til the end. He was also working for the CIA. The only reason he went against the war was because it had failed, not because he was against the reasons for going in or the loss of life on both sides. It think this piece from LewRockwell.com sums him up well... The CIA agent, founder of the modern conservative movement, enforcer of warfare-state discipline on the right, brilliant writer and editor, transoceanic sailor, harpsichordist, TV star, charming aristocrat, founder of National Review and Young Americans for Freedom, enabler of neoconservatism, expeller of heretics from Birchers to Rothbardians, and thoroughly bad ideological influence in general, is dead at 82. Here is the NY Times obit. David Gordon and others will have more to say about him and his movement in LRC. http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/019644.html
I remember Buckley on his TV show. My Dad had his magizine: National Review. I was only in 7th grade in 1968 but I still remember My Dad's reaction to the Gore Vidal- Wm Buckley dust up, It was during the Democratic Convention. Mr. Buckley had the courage to endorse marijuanna reform and told of doing weed out on his sailboat, beyond the 3-mile limit. I respect that courage. Buckley chased the racists out of the movement he led. Buckley publicly told Nixon to resign in 1974. He was a prolific author. His wife, Pat passed away only a few months ago. ,
I was amazed, I thought he would have been immortal, but I guess money and influence can't buy a reprieve from the ultimate end we all share. I always had trouble understanding him, the man had a habit of not opening his mouth when he talked, especially his little side speeches when he was trying to be snarky.
