i think it is time we realize that pets, that we feed (i do not talk about cats who feed themselves by hunting) ar very bad for the environment. i you have a pet, great. keep loving it. but when he or she passes away, TRY not to get a new one.... all the meat industry in an UGLY business, plus overfishing that is really harming the ocean.... what is most important, your pet or the planet?.
There's a great article in Vegetarian Times this month on vegetarian diets for pets-cats and dogs. Basically, it says that it's really hard to do. While animals might survive on a veg diet, they don't thrive. I don't have any pets myself. Don't care for animals in boxes.
I dont know...im not hip on animals dieing in shelters. I worked at the "humane" society for a long time...and bad for the enviorment or not I will keep adopting dogs from there. Just leaving them there to die is the most awful things Ive ever heard. I guess leaving them there is the animal rights thing to do though according to you?
Not all pet food is from factory farms, you can get all natural stuff... I wouldn't feed my pet the popular brands anyway after we all learned that they don't give a shit whats in there. I'm gonna take care of an animal if I can!
I've never lived without a furry family member a day in my life...Not going to start now. I'll always have a dog. Plus I never want kids, so my dog is my kid.
i respect that... i ma really tired of this stupid little liny genetically modified dog that keeps screaming all fucking day quite near my place... it is sad for the dog (even though i cant stand these shouting tiny fashion dogs) dog shit on the streets.... it is quite disgusting.
yes, i know, dogs also have souls... i still believe that some dogs are smarter/more natural/more evolved than others. in the town where i live, there used to be very few dog 15 yrs ago, and those who where around, where not these tiny tiny modern things. today, it has become such a trend!!!!!!!!!! people who not really into dogs get these unnatural creatures, that could be easlily be killed by a cat.
Laeyne, ALL domestic dogs have been "genetically modified," if by that you mean created for hunting, companionship, herding, etc. Some of the oldest breeds are toy breeds; they're nothing new. I think you're probably referring to a breed of "designer dog."
my "pet"/friend/roommate is a vegan... she is a rabbit. its nice to be an organic gardener and have a rabbit. none of my crops will go to waste. i usually grow way more than i can use. rabbits are a great vegan alternative to cats and dogs. the can be left to freely roam the house. they can be litter trained and will respond to verbal commands. the can be taken outside and walked no matter what size yard you have. they are generally friendly, and loving with all ages. and they do the cutest things, especially lops.
Sorry, but I think it is wrong to raise a dog/cat on a vegetarian diet. They didn't choose to eat that way so why force your beliefs on another living being? They instinctively eat meat. As for not having a pet, I think that is bullshit because if you adopt animals from a shelter than you're saving their lives. I choose to be vegetarian. No one forced it on me. I get pissed when people force their meat on me, so why be a hypocrite? All living things should choose what they want to eat. As for rabbits, I wish I could have one, but i'm allergic.
I completely agree with you, Bumble. I just think its more than just choice though. They are meant to eat meat. Its what they do naturally, and its what their bodies are designed to do, and to need. I think its disgusting, hypocritical and harmful to force a natural carnivore/omnivore onto a vegetarian diet.
Completely. One of the main reasons im putting off getting a doggy is i feel for optimum health they would need fresh meat, not even that tinned crap but good quality meat as part of their diet, and at the moment im a lot happier with my bunnies and their hay Less mess, less hassle, less expense and less issues. Dog and cat teeth, and especially cats with their claws, are so obviously designed for tearing flesh..dogs can be raised with a highr veg intake but theyre still omnivores. Cats need A LOT of meat as they are clearly carnivore
Our bunnies are a giant chunk of our lives Were blessed with 5 wonderful vegan companions who give so much love and who we leave to hop about as they please between rooms as you would a dog or cat. Its pretty great, we have loads less waste too!
i am vegan and i have a dog who eats a normal doggy diet of meat which is fed to him by my mother but if i had it my way he would eat a vegetarian diet. vegetarian dogs have be known to live to ripe old ages. look up bramble the vegetarian dog who lived to 27 and nearly broke the record for the worlds oldest dog. saying this i would never force a veggie diet on any pet that would suffer because of it.
I think dogs can easily be vegetarian, most dogs will happily eat anything (my dog will eat/attempt to eat paper, small stones and hay without any encouragement) but cat's are clearly not even omnivores. If I get a cat in later life (used to have one who lived to 21) then I'll feed it meat/fish, but only freegan. That way I keep the boycott up without harming the cat's health.
Here's an interesting link in case people want their cats/dogs on a vegetarian diet.... http://www.ehow.com/how_5339_dog-vegetarian-diet.html
Well, Im not giving away my dogs for others to be happy. That is a wee-bit extreme. I will continue giving dogs/cats and other animals homes. They need homes just as well as my guinea pig, bird, and non-meateating fish. Forcing them to not eat meat is hypocritical and unnatural to their "nature". However, this is just my opinion. However you feed your animals is fine, just dont starve them or leave out the needed nutrients.
