We just purchased a home with a large existing garden. while most of it looks to be annuals the realtor said there are mature asparagus plants. the garden was abandoned for a year and I don't know how to identify the asparagus so I don't destroy it when I remove the annuals debris. what do i look for?

asparagus coming up in the spring you probably wont see any thing till then it will probably be in a raisd bed somewere it takes about 5yrs to get a mature bed so be carful if its still cold where you are you could pull the debrie out with out hurting them!! good luck peace!

Hi Aliannmil, welcome to the Forums. You may be able to identify last years' asparagus plants. I'd look for a large clump or bed that has ferm looking plants 3 to 5 feet tall that were killed back to ground level by winter. None of the left over debris from last year has nothing to do with this year's crop. What you'll harvest (eat) are the young new spring shoots. What climate zone are you in?

    Peace,
