Tok it looks to me that there are a few people here that, while they don't know you so well, do care about you.

What BS! Once you sign the papers, they can send you anywhere they want, no matter what the recruiter promised you. Read the fine print.
Travel, meet new people, .... and kill them.

BLuECaT00 ~ I do have to agree. It seems the Marines and Army are very rude & stuck up. I thought my Navy recruiter was going to be a prick but he was very friendly and didn't tell me I could NOT get in just because I have to lose about 10 more pounds...groovy!

I don't know if they are really rude or stuck up. I wouldn't TRUST anything a recruiter tells you though.
I have just noticed being around all 4 branches that the marines were always rude and drunk in public more.

I think the marines "think less" I guess they have too, considering their job and some of the ordeals they get put in.

The army has good and bad. The medical people are great but then I am kinda partial. :) The special forces people are pretty much freaks. My son went through that training in NC and in Okla. it is brutal and down right INSANE. The Navy peeps I have met were very laid back and all the lifers I have met have been very well educated and nice people. The Air Force is good too. My son said if he joins again he will join the Air Force (which he won't I plan on holding him hostage) but the problem with them is they have been putting the airmen on the ground with the marines. I never remember that EVER being done before so there has been a large number of airmen deaths.

I know there are some old soldiers out there....do you guys ever remember the airmen getting sent in with infantry? Maybe it is something they do when soldiers are in short supply.

This is all labeling though you can't really judge the whole system on a few. I'd sure wait before I signed anything! Wait and see who gets in office next.

Are you at all claustrophobic peacechick? Have you toured a ship yet? I was in Galveston Texas and went on a navy ship once.

    I don't think I could handle it!

BTW, something i didn't think to mention in my first reply is that i was discharged as soon as the army found out i had been prescribed anti-depressants. I doubt that you can get in and, to be honest, i hope you can't because someone with mental or emotional problems who joins the military would be very likely be treated horribly and probably come away with worse mental/emotional problems than when the person went in. Now that i've read the whole thread i can say that the only person who replied here (at least that i remember) who was BSing you was ESRUOS ENO. (i'm pretty sure most things comming out of his mouth is BS). And the army is FULL of idiots like that! (I'm not saying every one in the military is like ESRUOS, or is an idiot, but there are enough to go around.)

And the army is FULL of idiots like that....

The world is full of idiots like that. Recognizing them is a virtue. :)

How long ago did you try to get in the service because I know a couple guys that are taking anti depressants and had no trouble getting in. I guess it could depend on side effects of meds and if the condition is under control. I don't know.
Not that I want you to join. I don't. I was just wondering if they turned you down before or after the recruitment shortage.

The marines have even started taking felons and they wouldn't do that a year ago.

Well, it wasn't me trying to get in, i already was for two and a half years. What i said was that i was discharged once they found out about the depression/anti-depressants.
That was a long time ago though ..1986 - 90. I suppose it may have changed since then.
Taking felons now, huh? That's new. As i recall you had to be pretty squeaky clean to get in back then too.

Yes I know I couldn't believe it either but they take felons now.

WASHINGTON — The Army made its recruiting goal last year despite an increasingly unpopular war by turning to people convicted of serious crimes.

Recruiters signed up people who had committed such felonies as arson, burglary, aggravated assault, breaking and entering and driving while intoxicated.

The Army Recruiting Command said "moral" waivers for 1,620 felons were approved in the 2007 federal fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30. That was far above the 2006 mark of 1,002.

The Army called giving waivers "the right thing to do" for those who want to serve. But a former Vietnam-era combat commander warned the service has cut a Faustian bargain it has made in the past and came to regret.

My husband is in the Army right now, so I feel like I have a little bit more objective view about it. There are some good things about the military in general: discipline, security (job security, anyway), decent pay, etc. But, and this is just my opinion and I don't want to step on any toes here, it usually just is not worth it. If you aren't 100% sure that this is what you want to do, then I don't think it's a good idea. My husband is having a lot of doubts and worries, mostly because he doesn't know if he agrees with what we're doing or not. If you don't know, or don't believe in this war, don't fight it. You'll regret it. Anyway, that's my two cents. :) Good luck, and think carefully, no matter what you decide to do.

they'll just use computers to do the killing if we stop joining, or institue the draft again, or some other country like china will take are asses over, its not the soldiers who r responsible for war, its the government... dont blame the soldiers

Very well said. Give your hubby a hug for me. Hang in there. I know what you are dealing with. My husband said the Army has changed a lot. We just want our son out. The people at the top are trying to run the military like a business and that does not work when you have wounded.

As far as felons in the military Tok...I personally have no problem with it. I posted that article just to back up what I said about them starting to accept felons. It helps some kids get their lives together. I do however object to young people caught with weed given a felony charge and then given the choice of jail or the military. I feel that is really wrong.

Sorry, but I think, you're just fuckin' lazy to explore other options to move ahead in life, other than joining the military and perhaps, taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, which is totally understandable.

The G.I. Bill is just a carrot that the military use as bait to recruit cannon fodder or those they can brainwash and turn into full-blown killers.

There you go again buying into the lies and the fear mongering that the military uses to justify it's very existence.

Well, I really think, you're typical military material anyway. You don't seem to use your brain to do some critical thinking skills.

You basically want decisions made for you. You seem to be a perfect fit for the role of cannon fodder.

Good luck to your military career. I hope you come back in one piece.

    Good
