So, my dreads are about 2 months old now and, due to the thickness, and course nature of my hair, they've been locking together fairly well for a start. However... I've got a few rebels in the ranks that have dreaded up at the bottom, but remain straight, unlocked hair from there up. In other words, the backcombing fell out. I've read that it's not a good idea to re-backcomb after they've started to form below, so, is this problem to be sorted out by palm rolling and time? Or is there somethin' else I should/could be doing to help the process? Thank you!
I just re-comb mine then thumb/palm roll the ends... works for me. Maybe I missed something important about not re-combing? If you really don't want to re-comb then in time they should lock them selves up.
recombing isnt likely to do much good if theyre locked from the bottom. if you leave them alone, they really will lock up, i promise they might get really short and fat too which is always cool. if you really want to get them back to something resembling a dread you could try a felting needle... but i personally wouldnt, its really damaging to your hair. trying to rebackcomb would also be damaging and i just dont think it would work. just use patience and love and they will sort themselves out eventually. 2 months is still very young.
Oh, thank you. Yes, I had a feelin' it was somethin' like that. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doin' them wrong.
there is no such thing as wrong or right when it comes to locks... everyone does it differently, as long as you dont brush your hair or cut it they are lookin' very nice by the way
3 months theyre not even really dreads yet, just beginning, backcombing really wont help (i always maintain that its really a wasted step because they will come apart before they come together naturaly) if theyre holding together at the ends, they will knot towards the roots often if i have strands that arent part of dreads and are anoying (blowing in my face or whatever) i'll just tie a knot in the end and leave em be and in a month or so they become a dread the only thing u can do wrong with dreads (other then brushing/cutting or wax) is to expect them to be any way other then the way they are
Thanks, Looney. Yours are quite crescent fresh as well. *LOL* And what I meant by 'doing them wrong' was in the same way you would 'do someone a wrong.' Though it is a comforting reminder that there are many ways they come into being. Thank you, Soaringeagle. I think I know what you mean. They're all forming into lightning bolt shapes (because my hair is naturally wavy) but I've come to accept that. Kinda makes my head look like an octopus. Who knows, maybe I'll dress my head up to look like the Kraken next Halloween.... or, maybe Cthulu... or maybe not. *LOL*
