Gathering losing 'peace' label

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST - Authorities patrolling the annual Rainbow Gathering in the forest released a series of reports Tuesday that painted a darker portrait of this year's event, which purports to revolve around peace, love and a nonviolent lifestyle.

Marion County deputy sheriffs said they arrested Bernard Tully, 28, of Idaho on battery and other charges related to an attack on another camper Monday.

According to a sheriff's report, Pamela Montanez, 46, of Leesburg reported that her son, Christopher Simmons, 22, was pulled from her car and beaten by a man with tattoos on his head and neck. The man also caused about $500 in damage to Montanez's vehicle, the report said.
Tully's arrest stemmed from one of several recent incidents blamed on participants of the gathering.



According to a Web site dedicated to the Rainbow Family, the gathering claims to bring together a "non-organization of non-members" for a two-week celebration of love and peace.

But U.S. Forest Service law-enforcement officer Chris Crain said authorities have made more arrests of gathering participants this year -- 14 to date -- than they had in the past two years combined. He said officers have investigated several assaults, burglaries, thefts and drug offenses in the area of the gathering.

Marion County deputies also said in a news release that another member of the Rainbow Family, Russell Sickler, 41, was arrested on a burglary charge Feb. 3, accused of breaking into an unoccupied RV to watch the Super Bowl.

The gathering is going great. The thing that really happenned is that Little Chris has been passing out DOC and "Raid" sprayed on paper plates, giving it to kids and spinnin" them for days. Poison is what Chris & Kenny were selling and giving away. They made the mistake of thinking the family wanted that bullsht. When Chris showed up, he was run out...we police our own, so the LEO's don't have to or when they won't...So come out to FR27 to the best gathering in years!!!

Funny, I was just thinking of Arjay a little while ago. He was one of the first rainbow people I met (actually I remember that he was the first person on his feet to hug and welcome us), at a very small OM Valley council in Kentucky in 1993. At the national in '99, he was at OM Valley's kitchen for at least a few days, sometimes playing Elvis Costello's "Peace Love and Understanding." That song and his playing of it came to mind early this morning, so I grabbed the guitar and started working on that song. I never knew him well or anything, but good to hear he's apparently doing well.
