I took a pre employment drug test on Friday. I found out that two of the prescription drugs I take will probably show up for positive for Methamphetamine.

Now I know I haven't done anything wrong and I already have a print out of my prescriptions but something about positive for meth worries me.

    I take ritalin and wellbutrin.

Has anybody ran across this and how did the employer react?

well, not exactly this. however, i used to go to a rehab and i once tested positive for opiates, they refused to believe ide never done cocain or opium(at that time, hehe)... the thing was, i had eaten a poppy-seed bagel that morning. be wary of this, u probably should have told them before u took the test

you should have had a form to fill out listing all meds you are on.
at this point, if the employer really wants you, they will ask what is up.
    Have the bottles, and explain.
If the employer won't talk, do you want to work for them?

They don't have you fill out a form for prescribed drugs you are using. I've had 3 drug test in the last 15 years and I've asked about that, each time they told me if there is a problem they will let me know.

When they hand you your copy on the back of that there is a place to list medications in case you get a call from there medical office specialist to discuss what you take. However that is not on the form you fill out, only on the back of the copy they give you.

My HR rep says if there is a problem, I'll be OK so long as I have scripts. But I was worried about something else, not meth.

As far as the "bottles", yes, I have them but I also have a print out from my pharmacist.

I'm really only interested if you've experienced a false positive for amamphetamine and you were taking a prescribed drug that caused this. The "poppy seed" thing is well documented and I've read that no longer is a factor in the opiate positive.

So if you have a story like mine, I'd like to hear.

    Thanks

If you are talking with the HR folks, you are probably good.
I had a false positive on this job & simply said I 'd pay for a retest, after looking up some info on the percentage of tests that read with false positives.
    They paid. I passed.

Well, I was worried about a whole lot of nothing. None of the medications I take raised a flag and that really surprised me. I passed with no problems.

Everywhere I looked on the internet I saw that Ritalin would come up for a false positive for methamphetamine. Matter of fact it really is an amphetamine, for those of you who remember taking a 20 mg dose gives a "bit" of the feeling you would get from taking mini whites. Not nearly that strong or as long lasting but still when I started taking them I knew that "this feels familiar."

I haven't taken mini whites in probably 30 years.

Also 2 weeks prior I had something weird happen in the middle of the night and somehow managed to scratch the cornea of my right eye. No idea how that happened but they gave me Vicodin for the pain. I guess it was out of my system by the time I took the test.

Thinking back now I'm not sure that Meth was one of the drugs they were testing for. I distincly remember Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, and something I never heard of but found out it was PCP. It might have said "Cocaine and Methamphetamines."

Well, all that worrying for nothing. They had the test results back by Monday morning and my background check cleared so I'm set to start work 3/10.

Well, I took a job with a company that didn't give me a drug test and I quit after one month because I missed two days and got written up despite the fact that I had a doctors note saying I could not come back to work for two days.

Now those are the kind of peole that I don't want to work for. And I stood up for my rights and told them to stick their job.

Well, you can live in the real world or you can stand on principle. Unfortunately that won't pay for groceries, specially in the part of the country I live in.

Do I think they should be able to do it? Hell no. It's a complete invasion of privacy. Unfortunately hippies became yuppies, then politicians, then sold out and that is why we are in the mess we are in now.

I remember when I was working at Hughes Aircraft back in 1986 and I guy who worked there with me said he wouldn't stand for it. At that time they were just talking about random drug testing.

He moved to Mexico. Hope he's doing good. Obviously you and him think alike and that's not a bad thing. Just shows you got a pair.

Congrats on landing the job, hookbill.
I tend to be against pre-employment and random screens. If you are driving their equipment, or you get in an accident, then, yeah, use can be their business.
as long as the chems and booze are looked at on the same level, I'm almost comfortable with a screen.
THat said, I put up with two for newspaper jobs. simple reporting, photo shooting and design work. Not in the press or delivery. One had a company owned car I was to use.
the other pays my mileage at a lower than IRS rate.
I think the first company had a decent enough reason.
    the current one? not really.
So when I'm job hunting, I "behave."

You know I have nothing against old hippies but I do have a problem with idiots. The "government" means when I go to work I pay for your groceries, along with everybody else who works in this country.

What an asshole you are. Seriously.
