I'm working on putting together an all female rock compilation, with the theme obviously being female fronted rock bands. It will be the first in a series that I'm working on simply titled "Digital Meltd0wn Presents:"; not very exciting, I know, but the music, liner notes, and album art will make up for it. Some of the artists/bands I am considering featuring are: Babes In Toyland, The Runaways, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PJ Harvey, Jack Off Jill,The Donnas, Veruca Salt, Daisy Chainsaw, Queen Adreena, Kittie, Betty X, The Avengers, Horrorpops, Lydia Lunch, Bitch Alert, Velcra, Roxy Saint, The Gits, Sahara Hotnights, Sexpod, Fluffy, The Soviettes, My Ruin, Bikini Kill, 7 Year Bitch, The Distillers, L7, The Kills, Devotchkas, Bif Naked, Rasputina, Penetration, The Slits, Pain Teens, Lunachicks Now I could use your help. I know you wonderful people are aware of some hard rocking chicks that aren't on this list, so please let me know of any artists, bands, or particular songs (preferably NOT mainstream), that you think should be included on this list by leaving a comment. I'm also trying to think of a good name for the compilation, so if you have any ideas please comment. Edit: If you're interested in getting a copy of this compilation once it is finished, please send me a private message.
Shouldn't the main important thing be that the song is good, instead of just not mainstream? I see a lot of names I would never put on a compilation myself, just because I don't dig the sound. And does it have to be female fronted as in with a female vocalist or can it also be a band with a female guitarist in it and a male singer?
The point of this compilation is to introduce people to artists and bands that don't get enough recognition, which is why I don't want mainstream artists. I understand your point, but there are plenty of compilations out there that focus on mainstream artists, and there wouldn't be anything original about me creating yet another one. According to my taste, the songs will be good, which would mean it would still cover what would be the most important thing to you, without catering to the mainstream. I probably won't include all of the artists mentioned above. Many of those were suggested to me, rather than singled out by me, which is why they are included on the list. I will go through them all carefully and pick out only the best songs for the compilation. As for your other question.. I'm looking for female fronted bands or solo artists. No male singers will be in this compilation.
I believe I have more than enough recommendations to put together an amazing compilation now. I almost feel obligated to make an anthology of sorts. I haven't had a chance to sort through very many of the recommendations yet, but some of the bands I have been able to check out are absolutely fantastic, and I can't thank the contributors enough for introducing me to such fantastic music. I thought I would share those recommendations with you all. I recieved these from neowin, last.fm, and my blog visitors. I plan on making a few compilations for the series that I'm working on, so I'll probably end up working on a 60's psych/garage compilation. I'll post a message on my blog and here whenever I begin work on the others. Just keep an eye out for it.
