I started getting into Post-Rock back in 2006 when I saw Tool at Fiddler's Green on Mushrooms. The band that opened for Tool was called ISIS. ISIS rocks the shit out of everything. I was just staring off listening to this completely new style of music that I have been searching for my entire life. I eventually saw Isis and saw Zozobra that opened for them. Very sick.

Not a lot of people listen to post-rock, and thats a shame. We need to start weeding out of listening to shitty music like Avenged Sevenfold. Music isn't about a particular scene or a state of mind. Music is there to convey differnt moods and settings to make the listener become at ease or a specific visual memory will be triggered. Anyway, who else out here listens to post rock? For starters to the whole post-rock scene you should start with ISIS just because I did, and if your a fan of TOOL this will be a very easy transistion. Isis is like TOOL except Isis has longer instumentals and less vocals. Hence the term post-rock. OK!? Word up

Actually lots of people are listening to post rock. I checked some bands out that some of my friends like and also are playing on stoner/doom festivals I was and were it unfortunately gets associated with.. The ones I gave a try I don't dig at all. Isis is one of them, they're headlining on Roadburn in April, which indicates they are quite loved. If they are not playing at the same time with a band I really dig I'll gonna see them. Live it can be pretty different, but I doubt it will blow me away. I love lengthy songs but I prefer fuzz/riff/stoner, space and real psych/jam rock and doom above the generally boring and artyfarty (to me ;) ) post rock songs.

Post-rock is pretty popular nowadays. Go to any college and you'll find it's fans.

    Explosions in the sky
    Mogwai
    The dirty three
    Godspeed you Black emperor
    Mum
    Sigur ros
    Caspian

^Some good ones if you want more post-rock.

Yeah, Explosions in the Sky is dope. Also Godspeed Your Black Emperor is also sick. Yeah, Isis is like Tool I think. In the beginning of both bands they were down right vicious. If you heard Isis's Celestial you will know what I mean, but as time they both calmed down and took a differnt side to what kind of music they play. Isis's In The Absence of Truth is purely a godsend.(I dont think you'd say artsyfartsy after hearing this CD) Its a good investment I believe. Oh, in april you go see them! :D And Iban, if you like Godspeed you'll love Isis. I also recomend these bands aswell:

    Zozobra
    Mouth of The Architect
    Rosetta
    Red Sparowes
    Neurosis
    Pelican
    Giant Squid
    Kinski
    YOB
    Intronaut
    Jesu

I really do think post-rock is the best. I mean, recently, after I started listening to these bands I just started finding all sorts of differnt emotions tied to each song. Words can add to music, especially like hendrix or floyd but I'd just rather listen to a 29 minute post-rock jam fest(like Godspeed) then say a 5 minute funky session. I do love funk, don't get me wrong, I just think music should be more than AABA.
Isis puts on a really good live show aswell.

I'm afraid post rock just isn't for me, Jesu, Pelican, Neurosis and Red sparrowes aren't my thing at all! All those bands have been or will play on this years Roadburn festival though, have you looked into doom and the stoner/fuzz genre as well? I guess so, cause Yob could easily be described as doom. They have some good stuff indeed!

I don't really listen to a lot of post-rock really, for some reason people call it post-metal more. I guess because it's heavier? I don't know I'm not that good with genres.

Anyways, Rosetta is probably the best post-metal band today. They really have expanded the genre. And thats the key, because sometimes post-rock and -metal songs seem tedious or generic. Their albums are top-notch. Check out the song "Red In Tooth and Claw", it is a masterpiece IMO. Neurosis are a kind of punk/sludge/metal and post rock mixture. One of the greatest bands ever (7 great/brilliant albums, expanding their horizons but keeping their trademark sound along the way) . Isis is good also, I loved Oceanic and Panopticon. In the Absence of Truth was a major disappointment, but if you like really post-rock you'd probably enjoy it.

A few bands off the top of my head to check out if you like post-rock or metal(not all fit the genre exactly, but pretty close):
    -Cult of Luna
    -Envy
    -Jesu
    -Agalloch
    -Red Sparrowes
    -Godspeed! You Black Emperor
    -Russian Circles
    -Minsk
    -Mono

I like some post-rock as well. I've been listening to Godspeed since 2000. For a long time, I thought that they were a one-of-a-kind band (and in a way, they are). Once others like Sigur Ros, Efterklang and A Silver Mt. Zion hit my radar, I thought it was great that this new style was being explored. I still don't think any group has come close to what Godspeed has created (A Silver Mt. Zion, notwithstanding sine they are made up of former Godspeed members), but Sigur Ros is pretty impressive. Cult Of Luna is pretty good as well.

Isis isn't Post-Rock. Isis is Post-Metal. Two very different things.

^^ I would agree on Isis even though they have become progressively more post-rock in a sense that they have clean vocals and aren't as heavy. But I disagree post-rock and post-metal are two pretty similar things.

If you don't see the connection between post-rock and post-metal, you truly are an idiot.

Post=Same instrumentation different purpose, for Metal probably lighter, less theatrical.
@Neuroptican: I didn't say they didn't have connections, I said they weren't similar, as in they sound nothing alike.

Yes it did. They sound nothing alike, but they have connections. Like ELP and Camel.
