Need your suggestions

As a project for my sociology class, I have to go out in public and break a social norm, and study peoples reactions. I can't do anything illegal, and I can't hurt myself or anyone else. I need to submit my topic on Friday. Do you guys have any ideas for me?

 

wear your underwear over your pants haha, idk

 

Cross dress Monty Python style including the high pitched voice and go shopping as if you were a housewife. That should get alot of reactions.

 

sing out loud a nice catchy song while everyone is rushing theyre shopping

 

walk around on all fours, lol i have no idea. maybe put on clown makeup, but wear a nice suit.

You can run around the mall with a Cartman mask on, asking employees if they have hats your size. You must talk and act like Cartman of course.

People were freaked out. Most chicks didn't know who Cartman was.

sit on a bench on a busy street, openly reading a porn mag. the dirtier, the better.

 

make a monty python silly walk. or skip. or scream periodically. cartwheels? ask people if you can give them a hug. "Hi, could I give you a hug?" lay crosswise in the sidewalk with your head propped up, reading a book. act like a gorilla. can you have help? play a pretend game of basketball, or any other sport. "fore!" is bound to get some reactions, especially when they realize the person playing golf has no clubs. Be creative!

Or go around in a dark trench coat looking really susspisious.

make it same sex or something thats not the norm. If you do go this route make sure there isnt anything on the cover that could get you in trouble in case a minor saw it or something.

 

that CAN get you in trouble. its not legal to display pornography publicly, ESPECIALLY if children are around. of course it would largely depend on the discretion of a police officer if one should be involved, and you're not going to end up in jail or anything, but it probably WOULD be illegal. even if you aren't sitting there showing the pictures to other people, the pictures are openly visible to anyone looking from the right angle (i.e. someone who happens to walk behind where you're sitting and glance over your shoulder)

this is a pretty common and interesting project for psychology classes, and i've had to do it twice for various psych classes.

here are some ideas:

if you are legally allowed to smoke tobacco in public places where you live (are there smoking sections in restaraunts?) you can go to a headshop and purchase a really cheap NEVER USED! small plastic bong. it is of GREAT importance that it has never been used for pot if you want to be able to be confident that there is no way for you to get in trouble. a used piece is illegal! anyway, grab some rolling tobacco or pipe tobacco and go to a nice restaraunt with the small, clean, plastic bong concealed. ask to be seated in the smoking section, as to break no laws. when you are seated fill your bong from your glass of water and commence to smoke tobacco from a pipe obviously designed for illegal drugs. i've heard of this being done for this project where i live in the years before the smoking bans we now endure. he was kicked out of the restaraunt, but not before eating a nice salad (he lit up after eating a little...got some free food out of the project!)

cross dressing while performing normal activities is a good one for males, but be careful if your area is particularly....hostile....to such behaviors. i went to a greek restaraunt in a skirt and tight shirt and shoulder bag and sat through an entire meal that way....along with my girlfriend at the time. VERY wierd looks from people, but no one confronted me or said anything, just were very, very rude.

also perhaps you could get take out from one restaraunt, go into another establishment and sit down and eat there.

a fun one is to draw a bunch of pictures that look like a little kid drew them (crayons or markers are key!) and go walk around downtown handing them to people, telling them you made it especially for them. it works better if you can manage to look like a vagrant.

going an entire day while all the time interacting openly with an imaginary friend is a pretty good option, too. hold one sided conversations with him or her in front of people who do not know you. particularly good places to do this is in a place of business where you are a customer....a restaraunt, a shop....even better if you're with a real friend as well, who neither addresses the imaginary friend nor denies their existance.

whatever you decide to do, make sure its something that will not only get some interesting reactions from people, but which you can do with a straight face, without laughing or getting embarassed or too nervous. if you can't make it convincing, they'll just think you're being an asshole rather than strange, eccentric, crazy, or simply different.

 

try talk to people about god or pretend to be a johova witness that type of stuff seems to get a good reaction

taking an actual rip of tobacco and inhaling it from a bong IS a bad idea, and will make you feel lousy. there are several reasons i suggest a small bong.

1. you will be able to conceal it and get it in the restaraunt no problem
2. you will be able to smoke it without inhaling (ever smoked pipe tobacco or a nice cigar? you dont inhale, you just pull the smoke in with your mouth, not your lungs (you dont inhale) a full sized bong will not allow for this, as you couldnt get anywhere near enough volume of air in your mouth to smoke one if you aren't actually inhaling...so getting a very short bong (6-8 inches max) with a narrow diameter, you should be able to manage....or even a bubbler. it can always be washed out with rubbing alcohol and water later and used for pot after the project is done.

i would use real tobacco, though, as thats not even a grey area - its LEGAL! if you have mysterious herbs that look like pot in a plastic baggie, and you're found to be smoking them in a waterpipe in public, you may potentially be charged with drug charges even though the item in question isn't illegal specifically. i only think this may be the case, i dont know. but it seems "reasonable" considering that if you sell fake drugs and are caught, it doesnt matter if its really a baggy of oregano or baking soda, you'll still get in trouble with serious drug offenses. intent has a lot to do with it unfortunately

but i dont know the law inside and out, i'm just under the impression that those "legal herbal smoking blends" are only semi legal, not 100% in the good graces of the law. tobacco IS your best bet if you want to be 100% safe

the purpose is to break a social norm, not necessarily a taboo. the point doesnt have to be that it looks like you're smoking pot. its that you're doing something legal in a very unusual manner. pipes are sold legally, IF they're for tobacco use only (again, intent has a lot to do with drug laws!)....only its understood that nobody actually does use them for tobacco.

well, its what they're made and sold for. turn some heads by using them for it.....its not necessarily to make people think you actually are smoking pot, and in fact i'd strongly recommend NOT trying to make people think you're smoking pot. make it clear its pipe or rolling tobacco, in its original packaging.

dress nicely, be clean shaven and sober. go to a nice restaraunt, and do something perfectly 100% legal but incredibly unusual

 

Good point. I'll definately just get some regular tobacco. Another thing is, I'm not sure if my local headshop has any cheap bongs or bubblers, and I currently live in the dorms, so I'm not sure I want to spend the money on a nicer one yet. If I had to use a nice glass bowl instead, do you think I would still get good results?

 

You deffently should get legal bud not tabacco. The smell will give it away right away if its normal tabbacy. Better yet, pull it off with some salvia.

 

Wear a speedo for an entire day.
