I've watched it just yesterday, though it's been released a while.

It is not easy viewing: like any movie with a non-linear plot (no status quo-adversity-resolution line) it leaves you with more questions than answers and therefore doesn't provide the audience with any immediate gratification.

But it stuck with me since I've been battling with issues of intimacy and work and Junebug is an experimentation on those themes.

Has anyone watched it? Please discuss.

P.S. Also seen Brown Bunny but that's another thread. Cheers.

Junebug was all about the dynamics between characters, and there were a lot of interesting subplots as well. it made the south look depressing.

I haven't seen the Brown Bunny. Buffalo 66 was real good, but I don't like Vincent Gallo as a person.

I really don't care about Vincent Gallo as a person because I've never met 'em. Just curious how you came up with that conclusion concerning his character?

I didn't think the South looked depressing in the movie. But, of course, I watch movies for larger themes. Social analysis of movies are to me less interesting than existential themes.

But I'm glad you like it. Can you tell me about the subplots?

yeah, I really didn't put my heart into that last post.

it's hard to tell with Gallo since he's an egotistical fuck, but all that vanity could easily be a facade (just like him being conservative, but I wouldn't be that surprised). I still like a lot of stuff he's done, and he has been rather prolific even outside of acting. he interviewed himself (yeah) for a magazine in 97' and I'm trying to find it but no luck yet...

what I meant about Junebug making the south (or at least SC) look depressing was how most people in the film come off as naive or backwards in their day-to-day life, largely due to the regional cliches the characters are layered with.

one thing that I liked a lot was the animosity between George and his brother (the kid from The OC), which I'm happy was never explained. misguided sexual frustration was a common theme, also religion, family values... I'd have to see the film again, I had this same conversation a year ago and was much more convincing.

I liked how you had no clue what George was thinking the entire film.

What made it interesting for me is that "backwardness" wasn't equated with lack of insight. The sister is, in the end, full of wisdom.

I liked it. The characters seemed real, and they portrayed the awkwardness of youth quite well. It was looking predictable around midway through, and then it wrapped up quite satisfactory and a little less how I'd expected.
    Also, the soundtrack was awesome.

I just watched it today for the first time and I enjoyed it.... I don't think the "backward-ness" of the characters was meant to be a regional cliche... People like that are found everywhere! The friction between the family and Madeline really hit home for me. My family is definitely quite comparable to the one portrayed in Junebug and it has always been a bit uncomfortable for me to bring a new partner home and have him discover my "upbringing". It was interesting how George's thoughts on the whole situation didn't really come into the movie... the only time you knew how he really felt was when madeline chose to go to the crazy artist's place instead of the hospital.... Eh overall it was a pretty decent movie
