Today Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. Most EU countries + USA already recognised Kosovo's independece while a few EU contries like Slovakia, Romania and Cyprus said they won't do that. Serbia and their ally Russia called Kosovo "false state" - Russia has the right for veto in the United Nations Council. My personal opinion is that Kosovo should NOT be recognised as an independant country, because of: 1. Any change of the Balkans borders is dangerous and may result in new wave of violence. 2. The domino effect - many unrecognised countries in the world like South Osetia, Abhasia (in Georgia), Republika Srpska (in Bosnia), Kurdistan (in Iraq), Northern Cyprus may follow the Kosovo's example and also declare their independence. 3. Why there are double standarts? Why there is not a problem for the USA and EU to accept Kosovo's independence (there are 2 million albanians in Kosovo), while 20 million Kurds still do not have their own country? What do you think about Kosovo?

Are you for real ? Okay, you talk about unrecognized countries and then u mention Republika Srpska in Bosnia. How can you even compare that to Kosovo ? How come you didnt mention the Federation as well ?
Well, the federation is a good thing, but don't you see the news? Serbians from Republika Srpska want to split from Bosnia and to be an independent country OR to join Serbia. If EU and US recognize Kosovo as an independent country why there would be a problem to recognize Republika Srpska?
I dont mind Republika Srpska being independent or joining Serbia. But if Serbians do this, and EU and US recognize it....Croatians will want Herceg-Bosna again and Muslims will also want independence. Hmm...possible war ?
This is such a painful topic for me...I've been to demonstrations yesterday and ran away from the square when I realized what it's going to turn into...While 300 000 people peacefully protested and prayed in front of the temple, few groups of drunken hooligans burnt and destroyed anything along the way...Belgrade seems so sad right now...But don't believe the news, Serbs didn't want embassies to be demolished, it's only a small group of destructive people who just needed a reason to start destroying... I know that Kosovo was lost just when the Albania was created, but it's so sad to have to see it gets taken from the country which rightful part it was for centuries...Our whole mythology, art, literature and religion are based on that small piece of land....I'm just praying this problem will be solved in peace, with no human victims...And, mostly, with no some new wars...God, I can't even think about it..........
So some of your history is based on Kosovo. So what ? Albanians live there now..like they have for hundred years.
Almost all of our history is based on Kosovo....Serbs lived there since VII-VIII century, and Albania was created after the II Balkan war and afterwards Albanians started to move to Kosovo....Tito's and Milosevic's politics allowed them to move there freely and that's why there were so many of them in 1999. when the first separation started which forced Serbian families to move to central Serbia..... But, you know what, whatever I write here won't change your mind, that's why I would like you to read some of the history books, watch something else than CNN and rethink about this topic...I mean, you're from Sarajevo, you now how hard it is to have a territory with many different nations living there....Especially on Balkans...Only a war could happen there and nothing else....
I dont need historical books to know what I consider wrong or right. And you're right, nothing you say can ever change my opinion.
^ I'm scared it might happen again...Temperature is rising up and I'm praying this whole thing will be solved with no human victims....Unfortunately, there are some people in Serbian government who are willing to put the country through war if necessary and I'm just hoping that Balkan nations will in the near future forget about past disagreements and just start minding their own business.... So, tell me, if you don't need historical books to tell you what's been happening here for centuries before you, how do you draw your conclusions?...Out of stories older people around you told you?...I don't trust people around me because there's so much anger and pain and they still can't judge rationally.... I've already talked to some people at hipforums about the Balkans and our opinion is that we can't agree over anything because the wounds are still open...It's a terrible mess down here and it would need decades to make things right....
USA and EU all along with the albanians there are taking away Serbias history Serbians had thei country built there their church was established there and now its all gone because Mr. Bush loves the albanians the domno effect will hapen because i bet after ten years they will want half of our country to (Macedonia) and I'm so so against recognising kosovo as a republic because they want big Albania Ilirida :S I'm sick of it. Yes, we cant agree because the wounds are still open. And the wounds are gonna be passed to a lot more generations. Thats sad. But its the way it is.

You wouldn't mind seeing people in our countries in 20 years fighting over the same things they're fighting now?..Things they even weren't the part of?! Right....
The thing is, Sanja, as you and Piaf and I know, people on the Balkans are obsessed with inaccurate historical facts which they pass on to their children like some bizarre legacy...there really isn't much we can do about it right now, but hopefully we'll be able to change things eventually. I've noticed some positive changes in Croatia regarding our legendary passivity- people are finally taking some initiative... for the first time in years people are actually organizing major rallies and protests which somehow allows me to hope that we're on the right track as a nation . Nevertheless, Kosovo has nothing to do with Croatia- it's a result of American interests etc. , and Serbs had a right to protest. But I don't see the point in the threats some Serbian politicians made to Croatia if we acknowledged the independence of Kosovo...or why the representative of the Serbian minority in Croatia offered his resignation when we finally did. Completely unnecessary.
Don't you know that desperate times demand desperate measures?..Trust me, at this point Serbs are brain washed, hopeless and - desperate....And I don't see the way out...
Well, obviously, this doesn't apply to ALL Serbs there's always a way out , trust me ...you musn't lose faith
