Seems the issue was actually a driver in a sedan who while driving up the road to a crowd of people on the side did not slow down and take notice of this. That a crowd of people did not pay attention to what they were doing either and thus people died. The racers only real crime was forgetting to make sure all the stupid ignorant people that might show up had an iq above 2.

Again pass blame people. You drive, you must be aware of what is going on around you and ahead of you. If you see a crowd of people close to the edge of the road not looking at you you have the obligation to make yourself known, slow down and be prepared for those fools that dont pay attention. Its called looking ahead, simple driving skill. The driver of the sedan should loose his license for this.

well there is also this part:

The combination of the smoke and the dark morning likely meant the unsuspecting driver could not see the crowd, police said. A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the roadside as it tried to avoid the crash scene, according to investigators.

The Crown Victoria, which had a crumpled hood and a partially collapsed roof, ended up down an embankment with one of the victims lodged inside.

Again piss poor driving skills. Does this driver not know that in situations of low visibillity you need to slow down? Frankly the driver was not paying attention plain and simple. A wall of smoke on a straight road (most roads for drag racing are straight) and they fail to see the smoke, not prepare for a problem that made the smoke (could have been some wrecked cars best the driver knew in the middle of that smoke).

I have had to deal with this argument over and over and the law might say one thing but your insurance company will look at it differently (well if your a cdl holder they do).

If your approach an intersection and the light just turns green for you and you hit a car that was trying to beat the light your cdl is gonna get a knock against it. Your drving into smoke on the road from whatever and you hit something your gonna get a hit on your cdl, your backing up a semi truck and somebody sneaks in on your blind side behind you, you hit them your gonna get busted and so on. It is your job to pay attention, look ahead, be prepared and assume the worse. If you dont your not a driver your just an idiot behind the wheel.

Dont they call that a crime (child endangerment).

I totally see your point and please dont think Iam some sort of dope but I really wish people would stand up for thier actions instad of trying to blame others for it. Smokers blame tobacco compnaies, fat people blame Mc Donalds, prisoners blame family and there childhood, people who neglect thier children blame guns, cars ect.

I mean lets see the facts. 2 people drag race (brains shut down dangerous even if on a track and controlled), 50 people come to watch (brains shut down dangerous to be on side of road) , one comes after the fact on his/her way to ?? Crowd after launch moves into a lane of traffic and smoke (okay brains shit down here, low visibility and traffic) driver of car approaches a wall of smoke (brain shuts down does not think of what created smoke, whats in smoke ect)

Now you will have people who claim to be victims when in reality they placed themselves there, no gun to head just piss poor thought.

HWY racing late night is generally the safest time and place. I'll admit though, if I crowd of 50 people were ever standing in the middle of the lane, I'd probably have creamed them back in the day. Not on purpose, I just wouldn't have been looking for them.

It's all stupid, and I'm sorry to sound callous, but I wish this shit would happen more often. Stupid people getting themselves killed in large groups. I agree with yank. This isn't a tragic accident, this is just a good example of what happens when people don't think.

Wow, there's a bunch of non-car guys in the crowd, I see, LOL...

In my day, when gas was 30 cents a gallon, and GTO's, Trans Ams, Chevelle SS454's, Camaro 427's, Boss Mustangs, Shelby's, ruled the road, we did plenty of street racing. However there was a significant difference in the amount of traffic in the 60's and 70's, so it was safer then.

I remember racing a 427 Corvette in my RA IV GTO on the interstate, and almost getting smoked by him before his rear end let loose, and I passed him like he was braking hard.

I do not condone street racing, but boys will be boys, especially if they love fast automobiles.

Looking back, I realize how we may have died doing it, but no one I ever knew did. I also realize how crazy it was, how crazy I was, but what fun we did have!

Last year I got to run a famous local road course in my GTO, and it was a blast. Also, I have done some drag racing at another famous strip, but I have grown too old to street race. Or should I say, I've grown WISER... I just shake my head and laugh when ricers try and race me on the street. I don't waste fuel on ricers...

My advice to the young 'uns here would be to do your racing on the strip. Some strips charge very little to run, some can be quite expensive, but you should be able to find a track that does brackets on Friday or Saturday nights.

    Just my humble opinion...

Yes, the old GTO's and the new GTO's are cool. My old GTO doesn't have a leather interior, air conditioning, automatice headlamps, cruise, and many other perks my new Goat has.

My new GTO will smoke my old GTO. Ask my wife.

Anyone who says the street racers are at fault are idiots, its may not be the safest and smartest thing, but its not their fault that some other driver wasn't paying attention to the hazards on the road.

The sedan driver was more at fault than the crowd, and I definitely would not place the blame anywhere near the racers. Knowing the idiocity of todays society they would somehow probably try to charge the racers at fault for the deaths.

Its called being a responsible driver, you have to be aware of the hazards on the road, you can't control what other people are doing, just be aware of it, obviously the sedan driver had his head up his ass and could have avoided the whole thing had he not. Its an unfortunate accident, you could say 'had there not been street racing it wouldn't of happened.' . Well, I could easily get hit by a driver while I am walking down the street at the wrong time, and you could easily say the same 'had I not been walking down the street' it wouldn't of happened. Same difference.

While I do not condone street racing, I personally have a very fast car and I regular the local drag strip and I know many people that do street race. There is a group of illegal street racers in every city. Usually its on some desolate country road with very little traffic so the odds of someone getting hit is very slim.
