Ok I backcombed on friday/saturday. They took about 7 hours, a lot of that time was with 2 or 3 of my mates working on them.

Here are some photos: (excuse the silly faces in most of them, by the end I was really drunk hehe)

    Before

    Sectioned

    First few at the back

    First front ones

Nearly done (shows how thick my hair is)

    All done!

    The next day

Sooo I have a couple of questions:

    1. Theyve come out massively thick...way thicker than I expected..are they gonna stay like this? Or will they thin out as they tighten? or even get thicker? Consequently is it worth attempting to re-do some of the thicker ones to thin them out a bit?

    2. As a result of having several people backcombing them, theyre kind of inconsistent in thickness/length... will they even themselves out eventually or what?

    3. when the hell can I wash them?? its been 4 days and theyre starting to drive me mad!!

Thanx in advance for any help/comments :)

They look killer!!! I wish mine were that thick. They will thin out some as they tighten though. As for the thickness/length, I don't really know what you can do about that. You may just have to live with it. And washing, use Dr. Bronners, it's the best. And I hope you're not using wax. But anyway, you're gonna have a great journey with those locks!

    nice! they look great :)
1)most dreads get thinner pretty soon after backcombing as they condense and tighten up. later on, they could get fatter though if you loose length. everyones hair is different so its hard to say. they will be awesome in any case.
2)impossible to say. there will probably be some variation, but at least they will have character. i think uniform dreads are a little boring.
3)i would go ahead and wash them if theyre bothering you. expect them to fall out a bit and dont worry about it when they do.
    good luck :)

rock it dude! they're beautiful already! you're lucky to have such thick hair... mine look kinda sparse in-between dreads, and you definitely won't have that problem. to answer your questions:
    1. yes, they will look a lot thinner as they start to lock up, move around, etc. if you want, go to my myspace page myspace.com/isismagician and look at my blog. i've got pics from the beginning on up, so you can see someone else's process if that helps.
    2. if the sections were even, they will relatively even out. they may not be perfectly uniform, but i dig difference in dreads!
    3. wash! you'll be fine. i waited between 3 and 5 days and it was fine. just be real gentle with them!

    peace and love,
    isis

woo thank you all for the kind words!
I washed them yesterday and theyve really settled down and are looking much better!
I use a natural shampoo bar from Lush.

Yeah I've heard about the salt water thing...is it possible to use normal salt? or does it have to be sea salt...

Very nice. Mine looked a lot like yours when I started. I have supa thick hair. They should turn out great. Just wash gently until they get goin. Probably change sizes and texture with each wash. Your scalp will eventually adapt to your washing schedule and will probably only annoy you for a short time. Rock on man!

by normal salt i'm assuming you mean table salt. please don't use that. it's stripped of all the good things in real natural sea salt, and is iodized and processed and all kinds of ickies.

i LOVE sea salt, not just for my dreads, but i use it in everything. if possible, try to get sea salt from older sources, rather than some of the processed "natural sea salt" they've started making. i like redmon realsalt or celtic sea salt. but yeah.... don't do like one chick i heard of, who spritzed her head with a water bottle and then dumped the saltshaker over her head. table salt is not good for you inside the body or on your head!
