I don't think that academia neccesarily is just to feed the ego. Some people just like to acquire knowledge.

Travel is a great ego feeder. Giving some people the power to think that because they have seen so much, their opinions are therefore worth more.

I tend to find that a lot of people who go against the 'norms' of society are just as egotistical and up themselves as the 9to5ers.

Yes ofcourse. But hunger to knowledge is feeding the ego as well. Travelling is also a great act of egoism, although personally I know my opinion is worth more than others. That is a fact. And not just because I travelled, but mainly because I am the perfect creation. The universe is at my feet, the gods are worshipping me and every maiden wants to be my bride.
