well ive been reading a bit about compost and i want to try and do it but i live in an apartment. i also dont exactly know how to have a compost pile. does it need to be outside can it be on a balcony or does it need to be on the ground? could someone just give me a basic description on how to compost and maybe help me figure out a way to compost in my apartment?

Your intent is wonderful, but composting in or around apartments is a great way to get evicted. I've had a compost pile for years. I like to add manure to the regular waste and garbage in the mix to get it to cook up a few weeks or months earlier. I don't have neighbors.

    bluntman,

I think fishhead is right that a regular compost pile is a bad idea. However, you should look into vermicomposting. Worms are natures most efficient composters and I don't regret getting my unit at all which is called the "Can o Worms". I've had it in my house for about 2 years and everything is eaten up so quickly by the redworms that it doesn't even smell at all. You will have to make sure to order the worms unless you know a friend or organic farm to start you off with some. Worm castings are 6 times more potent than regular compost and the unit has a spout for the liquid waste of the worms which is called worm tea and is also an awesome fertilizer.

BTW if you have the time there is a really good video on youtube about how Cuba survived peak oil and they relied on humongous worm bins.
    Happy growing!

monkey that can of worms is one heck of a cool contraption. especially the spigot on the bottom. how much would 'food' do you add to it in a week and how much compost do you pull out in a year? i've never used one but have heard great things about them.

I live in an apartment and me and my roommate have a compost going for our vegetables and my mj plant. We have our compost in a 50 gallon tupperware container, and its been composting fine for a few months. It holds in the smell and heat. However, I dont use manure.
