    Here is a simplified version of making your own stable copies of seed you have bought. I recommend a good book for more details. Greg Green has a decent one.

    Note that if the seed you use a true IBL, you can skip all the backcrossing, because any male and female of that line should produce identical offspring.

    1. Pop all the seed you are going to do.
    2. Clone everything. Label everything (so you know what clone came from what donor plant).
    3. Find the male(s). Grow it/them separately, collect the pollen, and freeze it. If you use more than one male, take growing behaviors into account when deciding which one(s)cto collect pollen from.
    4. Flower the females (not the clones). Harvest/dry/cure and pick your seed mother(s). Be sure to take growing behaviors into account when making this decision as well.
    5. Toss the clones that were taken from plants you don't want to keep.
    6. Make clones of those that remain. Again, label everything.
    7. Pollinate the remainder (the first generation of clones, not the new ones). A paintbrush will work fine. It won't hurt to use more, but only one pollen grain per pistil is necessary. Use the paintbrush to pick up a few grains at a time and stick them to the pistils.
    8. Using the resulting seed and clones from the original mother clone, cube until stable (make it an IBL).
    9. Do a big seed run, properly dry, seal and freeze the seed.
    10. Test-grow as much of this last seed as you can (within reason). If the line appears to be truly stable, you can let the original plants go if you like.
    11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 every 5 years or so to ensure viable seed.

    IBL = Inbred Backcross Lines

    And you can just do a simple cross between any male and any female and keep the seed. You'll get at least some good stuff. Maybe more. Maybe just one pheno. Depends on what the seller is doing. But if you just want to do that, there's no reason you can't.

    I got a question about hermie's -- i know this might not be the right place to post - but i think the idea's are there... so i got some beans from a hermie that was shocked by folic acid and was wondering what everyone thinks about them being feminized or not? i am pretty sure they should be but not positive -- and dont want to waste any time if they most likely will become hermies themselves or chance the male-- id rather get clones-- but was curious if i should hold on to them or not.. if anyone has some imput let me know-- or if they can link me to the correct place to post would be cool too-- the sites kinda all over the map so just wasnt sure--

    From what I understand re: hermies and feminizing seeds, a self pollinated hermie should produce feminized seeds. % sucess I don't know. Hope this helps.

    They will be more likely to be female. They will also be more likely to hermie.
