Heya folks, I'm having a bit of an issue with my laptop. (It's a Toshiba Satellite, one of the newer models - from about 14 months ago)...so it's a great laptop and has worked really well in the past, but on Saturday I noticed it was getting really hot, and so I made sure it was getting enough air in the vent, and it cooled down. At night, I turned it off. The next morning (and ever since) it won't turn on!!! When I press the on button (whether battery or plugged in), the blue light turns on and the fan starts for about 3 seconds, then the whole thing turns off. AHHH! I am so frusterated because it is taken care of and there is no explination...and of course I am trying to save costs on sending it to Toshiba to let them diagnose it. Can anyone help me at all? I would really appreciate any suggestions, I am willing to try to fix it myself, without going to a computer repair shop who will probably rip me off. Thanks in advance, Peace n love, Unlearn
Unplug it and pull out the battery for an hour. Then put it all back on and try it. It might not work though, just depends.
One thing you can do is to check the bios is set up so that it only turns off at the right temperature some of those bioses with temp sensors corrupt and push the heat tollerance down so will cut out much too early you will have to research which motherboard and chip u have and set the bios accordingly, and also try blowing cold air into the fans with a cold hair dryer see if that helps The fact it overheats would cause me to also take close look at how the hard drive is operating I would bet thats the main source of your heat
That's another thing to try but the O.P. is just a normal user. I have learned that the BIOS is a little much for normal users to handle. Of coarse if your bold enough you can check the BIOS settings but they should all be set the same as the day you got it. As for the heat, the hard drive produces very little heat in comparison to the processor and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).
Actually I just reread your OP and now I am even more convinced this is a hard drive failure - when the fan spins for about 3 seconds that is part of the self test. If there was anything major wrong with the power suply it would not turn - infact some dell machines beep if they sense something wrong when the battery or power cable is first introduced. Its a tough one to solve if youre a beginner but your easiest and best bet is to take off the hard drive and try starting the computer. some Dell machines will not start if the hard disk is physically damaged. could be the same with yours. If the problem persists then I would suspect memory problems. With a hardware problem its no use wimping around with it. Either take it to be fixed or fix it yourself thems the choices. If you dont have much money my advice is start with the hard drive. eliminate that as the source of your problem get a manual from the manufacturers site search their support area for articles - use google to find answers to people who had the same prob
Google your laptop name and the word 'overheating'. You'll figure out the most likely cause that way.
I'm thinking your battery might have burned out. If not, than your CPU has burned out. If you have an AMD cpu, then it probalbly overheated.
its the heat sink or cpu cooling fan is failing. the pc shits down to avoid damage to the internal components. you will have to send it to be repaired.
