ive been thinking about growing dreads for a year or so, and ive decided that I want to start them now. Ive read almost everything i can about starting dreads, but in the end all the information has left me pretty confused.

Id guess that my hair is about 6-7 inches, it reaches my upperlip in the front, bottom of my jaw at the sides, and bottom of my neck as i go towards the back. My hair is also realllly thick, and curley.

I was hoping to get some advice as to what method i should use to start dreadlocks with my hair type.

    thanks-hashbrowns

that sounds similar to my hair. I backcombed when mine were about as long as yours but if i could go back I would take the neglect route. I've always felt slightly detached from my locks because I feel like I cheated by backcombing. Do whatever works for you.

also if you could be a bit more specific on the parts that confuse you that would help us help you.

    I would say Backcomb

You end up with something that looks like dreads from day one instead of walking around looking like stig of the dump for a year.

Enjoy whatever method you choose but if you are having dreads because you like the look of them backcomb. If you are having dreads on religeous grounds maybe go down the neglect route.

You will still have dreads you can be proud of even if you backcomb. It will still take months for the hair to lock up into proper dreads, you will still feel it has been a journey, none of the methods are instant.
