Ricky Gervais is the missing ingredient in what little I've seen of the American one. Has anyone watched Extras? Or anything else with him in it (He was on Live 8, pretty funny).
I count Gervais & Merchant's Office among the funniest shows I've ever watched. If you are a fan of that show, I implore you to watch Flight of the Conchords. It is far and away the funniest show I have seen since the office.
I only know the American series, but it's awesome, really painful humour, and awkward situations. The somewhat documentary style of filming and the horrible, horrible characters... magnificent.
i cringed watching the american version, not that it wasn't funny, it was but just didn't feel right. no comparison to the uk version
I'm surprised @ how many american shows are based on british tv - I often find myself enjoying the original series more, though, despite british humor not necessarily being my thing, or how 'used to' the american version I am.
The U.S. version is better than most American TV comedy, but it doesn't hold a candle to the British version -- & it's guaranteed to lose steam with every season. Gervais & the other British creators were smart & daring enough to let their version end early, before it turned into a repetitive machine like pretty much all American sitcoms. The U.K. show also came off much more believable as a mockumentary, and the sexual humor was much funnier.
I never saw the UK version, but I don't think I want to I really really like the US version it makes me lol so hard
