Do you let your co-workers know you're gay when the question comes up or do you keep it to yourself? I haven't started working in the field I'm studying in right now but when I do, I'm scared If I do let my co-workers know, that it might effect my opportunities for advancement in that certain placement. Has this every happened to you?

I see your posts everywhere you post-whore ! haha

I choose not to disclose my sexual orientation at work. Not because i am scared about what people might think of me but because in the long run it could negatively affect my career when it comes to promotions (sad but true).

This issue hasn't really come up for me because I haven't worked since I figured out I was gay...

My boss did ask if I was gay in my previous job (I think in a disparaging way, considering his other comments about us having to 'work like niggers' to get a job done :( :( :( ) - I just said 'no', but mainly because I wasn't even really out to myself then.

In future, I will be open about my sexuality if anyone asks, but I see no reason to broadcast it to a group of people who may or may not be accepting of it, and who i have to be in contact with most days.

Lol yeah I am...First time using a forum, so I have a bunch of questions bottled up ;D

Exactly what I'm afraid of. What about the friends you make while working? There's bound to be times where co-workers ask you to go out to a bar or any kind of get together after work, and when that happens there's a lot of things that can out you of your sexuality. Do you all together avoid after work get togethers with your co-workers or do you go with them and risk the chance of them finding out?

I keep them as co-workers only and don't allow them to enter my personal life. I don't go to the bar or hang out with them outside of work. They invite me out sometimes after work for drink or two and thats fine here and there but thats it.

The only time it came up for me was when people asked if I had a girlfriend or not...simply put, I answered that I was single and enjoying it way to much for any of that. If I was an effeminate gay guy, I could then see where this could be a problem.

I've worked in some interesting places before- restaurants, a flower shop, Home Depot, the theater. I never had a problem with the sexuality issue, most of the time because it never came up. Also... there were a lot of homosexuals in all the places I worked... in some places it was more taboo to be straight.

There's not much advancement in pay in the jobs you listed but I guess if it was someones main source of money to live then yeah. I was thinking more career wise. For me after college it's where I would be making my main source of money. There's a lot of different ranks in my field where I have to work my way up to and each getting a nice bump in pay.

Well, those were just jobs I had during the summer, when it comes to careers, things change a bit. I guess it could be a gamble to divulge your sexuality to co-workers, depending on the job, where it is, yadda yadda.

I work in a grocery store so I'm not planning on making it a career if things don't work out. I wouldn't give a fuck if my co workers had a problem with my sexuality. I only work for money. But luckily, I've made friends at work and everyone is friendly for the most part. One of my supervisors is [obviously] gay too so it's all good.

the guys I work with are nice guys, one is very homophobic the other three are slightly so BUT they wouldn't really want to work next to "one of them queers' so I'll keep it to myself
