I've had this idea for a while of making a window hanging of a dark blue or black peace sign on a tie died background. I've gotten pretty good at the tie dying technique, but I'm not sure how to get the peace sign right. Any patterns or suggestions? I was also thinking about adding the words, "Let It Be" along the bottom. Is there an easy way to do that, too?
Yeah, that's the only way I know of to get it done right. If you're not familiar with what nynysuts is talking about... basically you use wax to paint over the area where you want the design. As you add colors and stuff you can add more wax... lets say the first color you add is red and you want the "let it be" text to be red, after you add the red is when you would paint on the letters. By using wax it cracks a bit and that gives a cool texture and stuff. You can melt the wax in a double boiler n' stuff.
peace signs can be tie dyed, but they are often sloppy, even with an experienced dyer. Batik is an option, as is dyeing your tapestry then adding the design and lettering in acrylic paint (or go expensive and use screen print inks). For a dependable result the first time, I'd stay away from designs in resist (wax, binding).
Thanks for getting back to me! Since this is going to be a present for someone, I think I'll just stick with what I know and use acrylics to do the designs. I'd never heard of using wax before, but it sounds like it could be really neat. Maybe I'll find something else to try it on. Are there any good instructions online for batiking or waxing?
I've been able to get designs by sewing the design in (w/ a basic straight stitch), and then pulling the thread tight to bunch it up. It takes some practice.
That basically is the only way to get a symmetrical design. I remember my first run, right after Paul and I got together (he's the master dyer). We lot ratted a Phish tour with stitch resist shirt with a very basic knock off of the logo, sans letters (basically the fat fish.) while that was simple, the first 20 or so shirts left much to be desired!
My friend Arlene Falcon at Tye Dye Everything in Moscow Idaho does AWESOME peace sign t-shirts. But she has lots of practice, some are a wee blurry but most are great! I told her about your question and she says to e-mail her. Just check out her web site for the addy-she is on the web! Good luck!! peace, Delfynasa
