my doctor wants me on omega 3 pills, from a seaweed source. i've been much warned about eating fish ~ some more than others ~ and i've stayed away. my doc says that the traditional omega 3's are fish sources, but some are seaweed. he said i could get them at any old store, but i haven't found em anywhere, not a healthfood shop nor a drug store. anyone have comments/suggestions bout this?

Well i personally have never been pregnant, but fish are usually either from waters filled with mercury and other toxic wastes, or are farmed using antibiotics and things. You could get organic fish, but theres no guarantee. I would avoid eating too much. Flax is a great source of omega 3. I never eat seaweed. I rely on flax, certain nuts and only a handful of other foods for my higher doses of omega 3 and really thats sufficient, even when pregnant, if youre eating a balanced diet. You could search further for those seaweed tabs your doc wanted you to take, but if you cant find them i would go flax rather than fish

flax seed based ones are a good idea and i would rotate them weekly with hemp seed oil which will give you a more balanced ratio of omega 3/6's .... Check out natural food stores or natural sections in grocery stores....

I did not eat any animal product aside from cheese. I took flax. My kid is a strapping 16 year old today.

omega 3 from flax oil is ALA, which the human body can synthesise into EPA and EPA into DHA. However, the conversion rate from ALA > EPA is very low and hard to increase, its possible that vitamins can help, as well as having a good omega3-omega9 ratio (between 1:1 and 1:4)

Algae based omega3 is mostly EPA and very bio available, more so than fish based omega3...its more expensive but its a lot more available to your body so you need less effectively, plus it doesn't have the same risks as fish oil and its ALOT more available than having your body synthesise EPA and DHA from ALA in flax oil

there are other plant oils with omega3 but flax is the highest omega 3:9 ratio (roughly 4:1) and they all only have ALA

Just a question about hemp seed oil, I drive for a living and am randomly tested for drugs. Would hemp seed oil give me a false positive like poppy seeds?

I took flax-based omegas with both of my kiddies too... I was an omni at the time, but very much allergic to fish. My kiddies are now 9 & 13, and quite healthy monsters.

Nutiva - Hemp oil is a great source of Omega-3 6 and 9... It has a perfect ratio which is important... It's what I use.

Hemp has chemicals in it that blocks the effects of THC, so it is anti-weed - Not sure whether or not it gives a false positive.
