They are so you dont get ash and shit in your mouth when you hit. Kindda pointless for a bong, but it does help keep the water clean. If they are a metal kind just lay it in the bowl and take a nail pen or somthing pointy, and push the tip of the pointy object towards the hole in the bowl. It will bend and make a nice little cone. If you really press it in there you will only need to change it every 10 sessions or so.

yea thats what i did since i bought slightly larger screens than by bong bowl.
also it stops weed dropping in if the pipe is horrizontal at that point ( goes down into the chamber)

and you will know when you need to change it, it will be almost impossible to fill the chamber up, the screen will be clogged with resin.

You don't need to change the screen every time it gets clogged, you just need to clean it. You can clean the screen dozens of times before it goes bad. Take it out and hold it with a roach clip and light it on fire. After it burns down, grap both edges and wiggle it around to knock all the burnt resin off. You actually only need to replace the screen when it gets damaged and has a hole in it.

And don't use anything pointy to put it in, just use your finger because you don't want to poke a hole in it.

Washing and using a blade?????? No wonder you didn't like cleaning it, that would have been a mess. Next time try burning it, the resin just falls off because it turns to ash.

^ heheh the whole story goes further, i smoked a bowl before it clogged. it was my last screen, so i ent to wash it and the bong. after the screen got ruined and wouldnt mould into the bowl properly, so i got my cracked bamboo bong, ripped out the pipe and bowl, and stuck it into my acrilic one, the bowl is bigger and it has a screen only used a few times in it. all last nights work :D

If one is ever in need of a screen you could always do this, take a piece of aluminum foil about 2 inches long or so depending on bowl size fold it in half a couple of times, you end up with a piece thats about a 1/4 of an inch wide by 2 or so inches long, fold one end up so the piece looks kinda like a check mark, fit it in your bowl and fold the remaining end down over the edge of the bowl. This thing is called a sling and works like a charm.

please note that this is used mainly in bongs

Nah if its a new bong with an un broken in slide some times pot has the tendancy to pull through before its been burnt, so the screen saves that from happening too.

Screens really are pointless for bongs, but I think that depends on the size of the bong and chamber and stuff.

My headshop told me there is no need for one with my bong.

I find screens to be a nuisance and hate cleaning them. So unless the screens came recommended for that particular bong, than I wouldn't bother.

    also just a tip:

If you've ever used a metal pipe before, you'll find that all screens are oversized, and need to be cut down to size to fit, and then pushed in with a pen or something to fit inside. So just do the same for your bong.

New screens are nice. Green hits with a new screen are very nice. Hence I like a clean screen - they're only cheap as heck, LOL...

the screens came with the bong but i doubt they were meant for the bong. i think it was like a freebie since the bong was pretty expensive.
