So tomorrow I am heading to the Hoopa Reservation in northern California to work with a Wildlife graduate student.. he's going to teach me how to trap and handle Ringtails!!! I'm super excited, cause i've wanted to work with ringtails for a while now... plus they're ADORABLE We'll be tracking them with radio telemetry. Any newly captured individuals will be radio-collared. here's a pic of one, if you aren't familiar with them. They are in the family Procyonidae (raccon family).
thanks for the replies everyone!!! well today went AWESOME. Cale and I worked really hard...from 7am to 5pm without stopping. and the best news- we trapped a new male ringtail and a fisher! So i got to learn how to do everything-chemical immobilization, taking blood, measurements, restraint, trapping, and putting radio collars on! it was the most fun ever. AND i get to work with these guys all semester 'cause he chose me to be his wildlife tech! im so excited here's some pics from today: me and a Bassariscus astutus (ringtail) male the fisher we caught (Martes pennanti) male
i've eaten Coati.. which is a procyonid, like ringtails, and it taksted gross. it was like.. solid, bad tasting fat
