If I don't really like the Grateful Dead, or their replacement, Phish?? I can name maybe three songs by the Dead, and none by Phish. What the hell kinda hippie AM I??
i dont listen to any of those bands. im sure that they are good, just not my thing. that dont mean a damn thing about peace and love tho..

Grateful Dead were just one of hundreds of acid-influenced bands who were essentially just playing rhythm and blues. If you want something more mind expanding check out Pink Floyd and latterly Tool; if you're into the folky-hippy angle, try Love or early Beck. I'd consider myself closer to the Beats than the hippies though.
People who think you have to do a certain thing a certain way to be called something don't deserve to be called anything.
Better to be kind and have hippie view despite not liking the Dead or Phish, than to think you are a hippie just because you like the Dead and Phish when in reality you are anything but a hippie. I however love both the Dead and Phish for me no bands come close.
I am a Grateful Dead freak and think Phish is okay...but I'm wouldn't consider myself a hippie. I think if you label yourself then you are really just limiting yourself.

Now, when I read that first post, I too thought it was absolutely ridiculous, but we need not say cruel things in explaining. As people have said, listening to The Grateful Dead and Phish is not what makes someone a hippie. And a hippie who does listen to those bands is not any more of a hippie than a hippie who doesn't listen to them.
no, you dont have to listen to those bands to be a hippie, hell, you dont have to listen to any music to be a hippie really, i personally am in love with the Grateful Dead ever since my friend Andrew turned me on to them, but i have never listened to Phish and i listen to Linkin Park so it all varies. peace,love and tolerance.... thats what its really all about....

And now to respond to the rest of the post - Weather or not you have been to a Dead show or a Phish show you shouldn't chriticize your family for bein "sterotypical" just because a lot of us love 'em! I think it may have a little something to do with LSD too though. Not that it isn't all about the music though, psychedelics make it so much more emotional (better, yeah I said it).
