how do people get away with commercial grows? like growing 60 plants or so? that would require about 5-8 1000 watters, which is alot of electricity. and that would be a red flag for the electricity company. how do people get away with it?

5000w grow is nothing, easily pulled off in a house.

Power Co. charges you by the Kilowtt hour (KWH), let's say they charge $.10 per KWH; the lights U mentioned would draw about 5KWH, ergo you would be charged $.50 for every hour the lights are on.>P

    So, @ 12hours of light they charge you $6.00per day X 30 days = $180 over your normal bill,>D

If your Power Co. adds surcharges (as ours does) for going over a certain #of KWH, let's say it adds up to a grand total of $300 per month:>O

Now tell me how they would the difference between running your lights, and say....... you received a big chest freezer and a brand new welder and a bunch of new Shop equipt. For Xmas which would equal the same draw of electricity?

There's 12K watts going where mine is grown. The power company couldn't care less - they're making bank off of that house.

Apartments typically are wired for 100amps or less, usually 60.

so no, you can't grow big there ;)

If they are not stealing power, they only use the electricity for lights and maybe run a 25 watter for the person living there (tv optional). If the police get a "tip" of a grow op typically they like to start with a check of the electric bill (and trash bags).

Yep. Just make sure that the oven or fridge (you get the idea) is not on the same circuit. The 400 doesn't draw that much current.

    (400 watts * 1.1) / 120 volts = 3.7 amps

The 1.1 is the fudge factor to account for average power lost at a magnetic ballast. Digital ballasts will not need this and will come out closer to 3.3 amps.
