There's a lot of good books out there on all of this, like McGills 'Encyclopeda of Stage Hypnosis', or one or two of the NLP titles, but the best book I've come across so far is by two mentalists called Harling&Nyrup. They've got two books out, Geist, which I've just bought, and 'Sleight of Mind Suggestion & Mind Control, the Mentalist's Toolkit' (bloody long title, but anyway) that I've had about a year. It's helped me understand all kinds of things about using suggestion and hypnosis in particular. No frills, no tedious theories, just how things work, why, what you can do with it. There's a fair bit about using the right body languge and all kinds of htings that when I first flicked through it I thought, 'but I know some of that...", but it's not until it's pointed out to you like this that it suddenly all makes sense and you're far more able to read people and manipulate them, in a positive way of course Good book, worth having a look at. The second book I'll let you know about, but so far so good. Clever stuff. MelT
Sorry, I should've included a link. It's a very popular book if you perform mentalism, that's a kind of psychological magic that people like Derren Brown in the UK and Banachek and all sorts of other people do now. I perform in a very small way, very badly, but its good fun. Anyway, this book helped me a lot. If you're interested take a look at these two lilnks. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sleight-Mind-Suggestion-Mentalists-Toolkit/dp/8799048108 http://www.worldmagicshop.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3094&osCsid=37f3100c582f454d7c14796d9eb61bef Sleight Of Mind by Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup SUGGESTION AND MIND CONRTROL THE MENTALIST'S TOOLKIT Immaculate Deception... Sleight of Mind is a Mentalist's toolkit of psychological quirks and techniques that anyone can use to enhance their performance and create stunning, original effects. No props and no stooges are required - just observation and the application of simple methods that will change the way you interact with others - on and off stage - forever. With respective backgrounds in Hypnosis and NLP, authors Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup have created an indispensable guide to powerful mental trickery. But this is no dry reference manual; instead you'll find this an entertaining and above all, truthful, explanation of a range of techniques - many of which have remained hidden for years. Covering the use of suggestion, waking hypnosis and NLP methods of creating rapport, reading your subjects thoughts, etc, Sleight of Mind is THE book for Mentalists and Magicians at any level. MelT
iv downloaded self hypnosis things off the net. they actually work, you just gotta clear your head entirly and follow what the guy says, and you willl archive a state of conscouness that feels "pure" thought free or somthing like that. doing it stoned and you feel like your floating. but i suggest trying a few, because some are far more immersive than others, you can get soooo deeply into them, its hard to describe unlless you try for yourself.
Yeah, I'd agree. Doing it on other people too is cool, which is why I like the book I mentioned. I got results without hardly trying, it's pretty strange stuff. You might be interested in trying meditation Peter, sounds like you're getting to a good frame of mind there. But you live in Brisbane huh? No wonder, Oz is the chillinest place in the World. I live in the UK but my family lives in Wellington Point, Mitchelton and Kangaroo Point. I just came back from there in March. Yer a lucky man MelT
YOoooo Melt. I was going to do a thread on this same book! Are you actually a mentalist or just interested? Iloved both of them, though maybe got more out of SOM at first,Geist was a bit advanced. I got them about a year ago, and now do some small shows, despite still having some confidence problems. I like Geist's way of thinking a lot,it saves me having to buy endless effects. Do you mind telling me any ways you've come up with for using it on people off stage too? Any other recommendations? I've got Luke Jermay's books but didn't really think much of the effects TBH, and Knepper...well...maybe it's just me. Osterlind is still the man though! Any other mentalsts here? SNB
I just found this on another forum: http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/133/mind_games It's 'mentalism' like above, good stuff. SNB
I have been hypnotized several times now and LOVE the experience but I have always been one to let my brain flow free. Getting it back inside me is usually the problem.
