I'm wondering if there are any folks on the central west coast (northern Cali or Oregon) who are looking to start a co-housing or communal development for bohemian types looking to live outside the corporate plastic life of mainstream america (while occassionally re-entering it to protest it) :)

Ideally looking for progressive minded people with non-violent philosophies, anti-capitalist, consensus-based organizing, activist-oriented, preferably vegetarian and into self-sustanence such as home-gardening.
I have very little experience as I live in metro New Jersey (the home of consumer-based life), but my motivation is very potent--bordering on desperate, and I have a great willingness to help out in every way I possibly can.

Willing to join an already existing place, or to help establish a new one (villages are great). I'm hoping to have my ass out in the west coast by LATEST spring '05.

Very serious here, I've tried ic.org but I feel more comfortable with people who I know from the hipforums.

I've posted topics like this in the past, to no avail each time. Serious folks only apply, not into "maybe" type people. Please send me a private message if you're truly interested. Enough talking, lets do this!

    Thanks,

Sounds like a great idea! Wish I could help you out, but with school and such that wouldn't work for me...but if ya get something established, let us know. I'd def. be willing to come check it out at least, after I graduate from HS and such...anywho....good luck! Let us know the results! Peace!

It is good to hear from like-minded individuals.

I am into permaculture, sustainability and self-sufficient lifestyles outside of corporate/government dependancy. Do you see yourself living in an 'off the grid' lifestyle long-term?

Ideally, Washington state and Hawaii are into permaculture/living off the land and biodynamic agriculture espoused by Steiner.

Similar to yourself, I have limited experience living outside of the corporate metropolis but have a great desire to live sustainably.

How do you plan on implementing sustainable living while homesteading, land ownership and just about everything are so controlled?

Looking forward to future posts from you.

    Happy Lives.

Oh silly East Coasters! It is far easier than anyone thinks out there! I live in Northern Oregon, and have property in Southern Washington! All any group needs to start cohousing is a bit of money a lot of integrity! To start one everyone needs to put in money for the rent of a large house, with a few acres. Out here we could get all this for under $1000 a month. If we say get a four bedroom, we can half alteast 8 to 10 people! If there are couples it can be even better for the living arangments! That means about $100 a month roughly plus living expeneses the first couple of monthes for the aquisition of goats (for milk products), chickens (for eggs), and garden vegetables and seeds for planting. I have lived on communes before, and am a life long vegetarian. I am so willing to make this work but, people have to be dead seroius for anything to work, and that's the hard part!

In starting our own village, this has been a challenge finding people who are serious about making the commitment. How ever I can see the importance of trying out the waters first. As I'm sure most people seem to feel apprehensive when joining a new group of people. Its rare to find people who just jump in with both feet without knowing whats going to happen next. And in reality would you want that type of person coming to the group. I find that such people are not serious and or lack integrity. For the most, most people want to go in to something thats already established. Mainly because its easier to test the waters and see if that group is right for you or not.

All the best of luck to you and your cohousing project. I hope you are sucsessfull.

    peace to you all.

    Hi,

I would like to bring your attention to the Postings under the "zendik" category in the communal living forum. I read that whole thread yesterday for the first time I was shocked. I think alot of people who post here read it, and if you want folks to get on board with you, i think you should address how you feel about leadership and organizing the commune ( to quel those who may have developed fears ).

    Peace.
and I am a vegetarian now for 6 months, I think it says good things about
a person and thier sense of compassion :)

My husband and I paid cash for 5 acres of land in south central oregon, we live completely off the grid...we have a solar panel, and batteries. we have 2 chickens, we're currently living out of our camper and its not too bad!

We left the big city last spring and have been doing real awesome!

I strongly encourage you all to give it a try! I work a little for extra cash and trips to the coast. Buy your groceries in bulk, until your garden comes in. Before we made the big jump, we lived on a farm for 1 year, and had a huge organic garden, it was a great trial to us.

But I miss like minded people. People in south central Oregon are not that nice though...nice enough, but no real connections.
We'd love to live communily if we found the right folks, and the right balance!

    SArah
