If people had the will to learn on their own then I'd be all for it, but look how stupid we all are with everything we're forced to learn. Then look at most of the people you knew in high school, these aren't people that are going to go out and read or learn anything by themselves that isn't said in the sports page or some magazine.
I learned far more after leaving school than while in it. They simply did not teach anything I was interested in. My 4 kids all learned FAR more out of school than they did in it. Most people don't even know what they really WANT to learn about until they get older... It's not natural (bordering on abuse) to make kids sit quietly in a room, at a desk 5 days a week for hours at a time. I cannot remember one single thing I was "taught" in school other than the things that actually caught my interest. And the worst thing of all is that I hated math so bad and found it so boring, that I have a mental block when it comes to numbers that has followed me all thru my life. And I was even on the honor roll...
Could those valuable lessons learned after leaving school have been learnt without what was learned while in school? Its a mistake to think that the goal of formal eduction is a graduate who is done learning. The goal of formal education is a graduate who can learn the next level of lessons that life offers.
Trick question. Obviously you won't go very far EASILY without learning to read and write. I went to a "good" school. But once my desire to learn reading and writing was satiated, the rest was MOSTLY just memorizing "facts" and figures, pushed at you by bored and angry adults who really didn't care if you did your work or not because if you didn't it gave them an excuse to get radical. My kids all went to a HORRIBLE school which I finally was forced to remove them from. Out of 4 only one graduated. But the "education " she recieved did nothing but make it a bit easier to move onto REAL things in life because she was not required to get a GED for things she wanted to do. Only 2 learned to read and write competently. Many times during many various conversations with them I would say things like "didn't they teach you anything about THAT in school?" and the answer was always "no." Those two had a really hard time of it until I got them OUT of the school system. Once they had the opportunity to learn on their own time at their own speed, doing it in an interesting way, they blossomed. My step daughter has a very high IQ and she attended COLLEGE until she walked out of there with a bachelors degree, but she is still working as a cashier at the Dollar Store... I never graduated. I never got a GED. I never wasted time in college. Yet I'm living WELL, better than most 9-to-5-ers. I own my own FARM. I'm a writer and a musician. NO thanks to the school I went to.
I believe that schools today need to be completely revamped and allow for more creativity, free thought, and expression. The idea of it being forced is also silly; there are SO MANY BETTER WAYS to learn than in a stuffy classroom out of a book that's older than YOU. Travel, painting, activism, community service, talking to people who are older and have been there. I think most parents want their kids to be educated; if for nothing else but pride. But there are so many other ways to go about it! Use some of our tax dollars to take kids to other countries, show them what its like in third world countries, etc. Take them to the galleries and important landmarks. Sure, "field trips" do some of this; but at the end of the day you're in a classroom staring out the window...
My question WAS a trick. Not to elicit a "wrong" answer, but to highlight a falicy that many people have about formal education. Formal education is not supposed to teach every subject that a graduate needs to get their lives started. There are many lesssons that are nessesary, but are not a part of formal ed. "Kindness" and "honesty" for example are skills that a person needs, but are a part of formal education. (They cannot be, since a lot of the ground work happens before Kindergarden.) Parents who trust a school to get their kids ready for life are overestimating the power of formal education and underestimating their own role in teaching the kid the important stuff. Compusory education adds the 3R's to the important stuff that kids learn from their parent and peers. (Is the purpose of school to get kids ready to get a job? I hope not, there is so much more to life than work. I hope schools give graduates the tools to explore the world beyond 9-5. It depends on the school district. (I voted in the last school board election. So far its working out OK, the school board hasn't surrendered to the "sale-able knowlege & skills are the important knowlege & skills" crowd.)
I totally 100% aggree, and every time I talk about this people think i'm psycho. Good to know there are other that feel this way about the educational process. In my mind, besides reading and writing and basic skills like that...school is pointless. Think about it, you wake up after getting poor sleep, stressed about a "paper you didnt finish". You fall asleep in class either because your bored or tired from that poor sleep, and you get a detention. You sit in that detention an hour of life, completely wasted of life. Its so stupid. If you ask most kids what they learn in school they will respond with, absoutly nothing, I think its a waste of time. If highschool was more of the college aspect such as, you go when you feel like it, unless you got bad sleep, or were sick. And when your sick, you dont get a lowered grade for staying home and getting rest. I don't know I can rant about this for hours. But does anyone else get what I mean? Mostly you just sit there bored and tired and stressed over something that literally dosnt matter in life. I guess you could proove me wrong, and I'm just radiclly thinking but at least I am thinking.
Well, that IS the way it is. Schools were not set up particularly to actually TEACH you anything useful, they were set up a BABYSITTERS. The act of "teaching" is kind of like the lipstick on the corpse. The APPEARANCE of actually doing what they are supposed to be so people won't question it too much, and the HANDINESS of having your kids "taken care of" every weekday so you don't have to, those are the biggest selling points that keep people (sheeple) coming back for more... Yes, school is designed PARTICULARLY to get one used to working a 9 to 5 job, and they try to create a mindset in the students that makes that particular form of SLAVERY OK.
Wow this forum is amazing, people that think like me! My plan is at least, I figure I will go to school just to hang with my friends for a bit, then buy a van and move out to california. Play some street music, sleep on beaches, skate, chill. Eventually find a place and do something usefull to my life such as with music. At around 7th grade I started wondering why school even existed and I finally realize it does nothing at all but tell kids what they can't do. Bullshit.
The answer you'll get depends to some extent on the school system and the community it serves. If you can home school your kids, that's great, but they need some interaction with other kids to gain the social skills to get them through life. A major problem with formal education is parents who assume their kids are getting an education because they're in school. We try to teach our kids to be open minded, independent thinkers, to question everything, including what they "learn" in school, which means we have to be an example ourselves. We don't tell them what to do without being prepared to provide a reason. Sure, it's more challenging that way, but it's worth it.

I'll buy that our education system needs an overhaul, at least on the national level. This "no child left behind" BS needs to go (and while we're at it, let's get rid of "no millionaire left behind" as well), it's just a lame-ass ploy by the federal government to cut funding for public education. A few friends of mine who are teachers really hate it, 'cause now they're required to waste a great deal of time and energy conforming to this central beaurocracy of getting their kids to pass the tests, or they face losing funding, and their jobs. Now they have less time and resources to devote to the important things, like developing their kids' personal talents. I don't doubt there's an agenda to manipulate the information kids are taught in the classroom, just as there's an agenda to manipulate the media. It wouldn't surprise me if in ten years some of the history books say Bush was the best president ever. My point is that on a local level you can get around this problem if you pay attention to your kids, and not leave it entirely up to the schools to educate them. We're lucky to live in a progressive college community where many of the parents are themselves educators, so our kids are encouraged to express their individuality. We're working on instilling the >50%/<50% rule by example, kinda like the golden rule we learned in kindergarten that everyone seems to forget, I agree it's necessary for the survival of mankind, let's hope your theory holds true...

Eh, we can dream, and if we want it bad enough, it will happen. I really don't know for sure where I want to head in life. It sucks really bad because my parents, counslers and whatever always ask me what I want to do in life.. I tell them simply "I play drums, and I skate." I'm intrested in activism and protest a lot. When those counselors ask, tell 'em the truth. THEY need educated too. I told mine I was going to raise chickens and have 10 kids. They thought I was just "being smart" (interesting choice of words) Well, I only had 4 kids, but I'm everybody's mother and I DO raise chickens, AND dogs, AND horses...
Wow, there are people who think like me! I don't know anyone else who sees it this way, it's nice to know I'm not alone. Pretty much everything I think has been mentioned. How school is just a repetitious, boring place that teaches you pointless things that honestly don't matter in real life. The only reason we "need" education now is because we've made it like that with the stress we put on 'getting good jobs' and 'making money'. It's stupid. And I hate how if someone gets low grades or test scores they're automatically assumed stupid. Just because they're not 'book smart' doesn't mean they're not smart at all. Maybe they're more of a handy person. I get higher grades (when and if i care enough) and am considered 'smart' but I know someone who doesn't and is considered 'dumb' that can take apart and put together cars and such. I could never do that. Maybe I'm the stupid one because I don't have such a valuable skill. My parents (mostly my dad) think I'm stupid for thinking this way but I think it's very true. I could rant on and on though, so I'll just stop.
Ruining public education was one of the first steps to the "New World Order" they are always talking about. Consolidate everything in the name of progress. Bigger is better and all that. They messed up when they closed the one room community schools, and that's a fact. Of course in cities things are different, but the drive has always been to expand. And when something gets too big, you just become like cattle with handlers. they took away a good deal of humanity when they expanded out of neighborhoods with long bus rides and the so-called "wonderful" FORCED school integration. Look at anything at all. If you are even old enough to remember, because things have changed RAPIDLY, you'll realize that everything of this society is getting bigger and uglier all the time. In any context. It would appear to be a "plan" to completely ruin civilization... So, I guess the majority don't get it yet, because they don't look at the bigger picture, but I think things are changing enough and fast enough that they might soon.
Not everyone learns the same way, so it's ridiculous to believe there is only one way to teach millions of children. The children who do well in the current system are labeled "bright" and "gifted" while those who don't are labeled "special needs" or worse. Many autistic children may have trouble with traditional education, but are brilliant in other ways that the system ignores. Having said that, I believe the public education system misses the mark. Let's take a look at history. Many people complain that history is all about memorizing random dates that have no impact on today. This is somewhat true- does it matter what year Washington crossed the Delaware? No, not really. Does it matter what the ideals and values Washington was fighting for? You bet. If Washington was alive, he would probably start another revolution based on the way this country is run! To him, patriotism was about saving the country from unjust rule which encroached on the rights of the people- what would he say about the Patriot Acts I & II today? Hell, do any of us actually KNOW what is in the Patriot Acts? We may have a general idea based on the media, but probably not. These are the things that should be taught in schools- the history behind the current events, as well as the events themselves. Imagine if we were taught about Saddam's regime BEFORE Bush got into office and started the march to war based on known bogus information- we would have seen what a pile of shit was being shoved down our throats. In all actuality, anyone, especially reporters, who knew who Saddam was personally knew that he did not have WMD and had no links to Bin Laden. Besides being religiously opposed, Saddam was a psycho control freak who would not allow Al Qaeda to operate in his territories. He personally hated Bin Laden. Did the average citizen know any of this? No, and there are still people who falsely believe Saddam was involved in 9/11 and had WMD (the highest percentage of people who believe this nonsense watch Fox News). If only we had known- but why would this gov't teach anything to us the citizens that might threaten their choke hold on us?
