hey, i have to ask after all these comments... what's wrong with shaved heads?!?!?!
It's taken me 2 years to grow my hair out to like shoulder length... I honestly forget what all the fuss was about except that people seem to like it more, it's more aesthetically pleasing and wahtnot. Well! I'm just considering dreads but i have a few questions that don't seem to have been asked here... (if they have just direct me, sorry if i repeat stuff!)
    1. how long does your hair shorten up when you dread it? i'm just curious... beacuse i know the dreads would be significantly shorter than my hair now, and i am just thinking of the looks bit.
    2. what are the "by hand" and "crochet hook" methods? i take it they are alternatives to backcombing? i'd prefer to have skinny dreads but i would much rather do them myself... so. Yeah, any help appreciated.

also for those of you who use dr. bronner's soap- i remember using that on my hair before and it always left it feeling greasy. was i using too much or something? for me i find baking soda water and lemon juice works great.

thanks in advance for your help!!

I want dreads, but not for a religious reason, more of a personal pilgramage of discovery, and also because I love how they look! My Dad said the other day 'I don't mind that you're a new age hippie cos you don't have dreads and smoke weed and be a dropout.' Lol, given that I plan to get dreads and smoke weed in two years time...
I haven't confronted my Mum about it, but she has always said taht w could do whatever we wanted when we were 18. God, I can't wait for uni!

oshinn, i think shaved heads are sexy. ive wanted to shave mine before but always resisted so i could have dreads lol
its hard to say how much your hair will shrink. at almost 9 months, mine are just starting to shrink and my hair has grown so much that im not really loosing very much at all. some peopl loose like half their original length. but it all grows back right? ;)
as for question number two, crochet hooks are more for pulling in loose hairs once your locks are relativly mature, a few months at least. in the beginning, they arent good for more than tidying up after backcombing or rounding the tips id say.
not to brag, but i make perfect skinny locks. ive wrote down my method a few times, ill try to find it ... basically it consists of making a tight knot at the root, then twisting and ripping the remaining length of the dread with a little backcombing thrown in to make knots. and its hard to understand till you try it.
    found it-
if you do this right, it will make awesomely tight, skinny dreads that will kick ass.
    good luck :)

Its a three point plan *beams*
    1. Im making a documentary about dreads and why i want them,
    2. Wrote a letter to my ma saying my point of view,
    3. Research that i have done and typed up

im not gonna just sit around and expect her to let me, if she sees how much i want them, how serious i am, the work i put into it, then maybe just maybe she'll let me get them. :) well thats Plan B... Im gonna give them to her all at once...

I wrote the letter, did alot of research and the camcorder just needs a tape to record over and then i can start filming. :) I planned it all, i even have a deadline (its a Dreadline LOL i love bad puns...)

I figure ill give it to her latest 3 weeks time. And yes you probably didnt really want to know all that bt i dont mind :D

Thought I'd share my parents story.

Well, all of my life I've had a buzz-cut and I always have wanted them. I never let my hair go past half an inch, if even that. Well, when I decided to grow my hair out, I never told them about it, but rather let them find out.

Obviously, no one had ever seen me with my hair getting longer, including myself. So they are forcing to cut my hair. I refused, and am still refusing. They've tried everything they can. She's tried stuff like hey
"Come grocery shopping with me?" and we end up at the Barber Shop. We even went through a big dilemma one time with the barber and me. I told him if he even tried to cut my hair he would have to deal with me headbanging the whole time.

They've relaxed since then, because I always neatly maintained my afro. She despised my afro, but gave me a shot because my dad had one when he was a Hippie. Well, I've decided to get locks, in fact I was just waiting until I can get the backcombing done. Somewhere along the line I decided to go Natural, and now it's been 26 days.

I ALWAYS have something on my head. My wool beanie, my other regular beanie, my hat, my tophat, something. So that helps to hide it, but she saw me when I came out of the shower and now she has a stronger desire to cut it more than ever.

She told me if I don't cut my hair this weekend I'm going to know what "the hard way" really is. I'm still holding strong, and I will NOT have my hair cut no matter what. My beliefs mean too much to me to be compromised, it's much more than just a hairstyle to me.

    Well, wish me luck.

    Peace and Love, John.
