I really want to study a medical-related course, but I am not sure about the animal-dissection side of it.. I do not know if my course actually involves animals, but a friend of mine doing a medical degree had to watch live mice being cut up, after she refused to do it herself and I want to avoid the same kind of situation. I mean, the whole point is I want to help people, not cause more cruelty. I'd really appreciate replies from anyone who's done this course or knows anything about it, waterlily x
I have lived a vegetarian life and -- for about two years -- even tried vegan living. I'm not a big fan of cruelty to animals. I have also taken a number of science classes and have -- fortunately -- only worked on fetal pigs. Any time a health care professional performs surgery on a human being, it is understood that the dissection is going to be done on a live person who -- hopefully -- will remain alive. I cannot imagine that a live animal would simply be cut open without anesthesia for the purpose of seeing the insides. It is a vital part of medical science to be able to see animal life in its various stages; for the puposes of gross anatomy, muscle study, nerve study, bone study, etc. I might suggest that you look at the coursework that you need to follow and see if you can get a copy of the syllabus beforehand. Most colleges and universities make them available. I am studying nursing right now and I believe that such knowledge is vital to the career that you are planning on entering. Good luck !
