you may think you're starting big, but you're really not. your dreams will grow to bigger and better things
All of this assumes a greater power must exist. None of this shows the confidence in the human race that MUST be shown before any true peace can happen. I do not accept government to be all powerful... its a bunch of old folks that serve their own interests, they do not have power over me - the people who listen to them and act as they say have power over me. To enact change we must empower every individual with the responsibility to all individuals... that is THE mentality that allows for peace, any form of government is useless without people who follow it. I see no relation to the question why in your posts... hegemony has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, nor does it debunk anything I have said. Why do *you* oppose asking the question of why?
Why is the precurser to every action and question If you dont have a reason why, there is no reason. You are either given a reason to do something, or you come to your own conclusions and act accordingly. Asking the right questions is key... but you must first understand why you ask what you ask.
I disagree. I don't need to know why I want to go travelling but only HOW am I actually going to realise this goal. If you question why? too much, you will never actually DO anything.
So you are going to randomly going traveling one day without so much as a thought as what made you come to that conclusion? Highly doubt that.
I do cast a thought as to the why in life but just not every single decision or goal needs a reason. But they do need a plan to realise them. I have been on the road for 11 years. I have lived in and visited a wide variety of countries, the latest being Thailand. Why did I come here? I have no idea. How did I come here? I worked hard then walked into a travel agents in Amsterdam, after getting off a bus destined for London from Italy, and bought a ticket to the first available destination that didn't require a pre-booked visa. I have been here for almost 18 months. I'm steadily learning Thai. Why? Who cares. How? Now that's important. Peace, A.
Things are the way that they are but things should change, we should develope everything, we can't just stand in one position so to do it we should know why things are that way.
There is of course a why You felt like it. Now.... why did you feel like it? You simply can't have a how without a why, it doesn't work that way.... well, unless your drunk.
Man we should ask why but that doesn't meens everyone asks... and that doesn't meens that there is no why, people like to have easy life and the why thing it is not in favour, I think before react, first why something happened than how to react, not because it is easyer...but because I could react as I should, not hurting anyone and not have bad reactions on me... in a way it might be easyer... because I'll suffer not as much as if I don't think abouth things... but you should think... and that thing is hard... most of the people don't want to think because thay might figure out that it's ther mistake... and that hurts a lot... people don't want to see the thrught... thay want to live in ilusions... that's why thay don't ask why... thay are afraid of what thay might find out... pwople are afraid of the unknown... that's why we are afraid of aliens... we don't know are thay friendly or no.. so we are frightened... "sad but true"-metalica
I'm not saying that there is no why. That would be stupid. But there is limited use to why, whereas I've personally found how, always useful.
I'm not afraid of the unknown. In fact, I embrace it. That is why I don't need to know the why? behind everything. If you think that sitting around asking why about everything reduces the illusions, maybe you are right. But who wants to live in a world without magic, spontanaeity and the unknown? I don't.
Its funny how in life, asking "why" is always discouraged, or seen as nosy. its actually rather sad, really. Adults get annoyed when a child asks "why" because not even they are sure of the answer anymore. A teacher gets irritated when a student asks "why" because they should just "listen and obey". An employer gets mad when an employee asks "why" because its a sign of trouble and insobordanation. A World Leader gets scared when people ask "why" because they know they are wrong.
I have absolutely no problem with asking ‘why?’. Though, it seems that the necessary question that you should be exploring is ‘what’ rather than ‘why’. When asking why we are assuming that an observed and accurate object exists about which we are asking why. Why this?, or why that?, etc. You say that Gramsci’s concept of hegemony has no place in this thread. This leads me to believe that the ‘what’ of things is, as they are, not understood. The very basic observations of what is actually around us must be understood before asking why. “I do not accept government to be all powerful... its a bunch of old folks that serve their own interests, they do not have power over me - the people who listen to them and act as they say have power over me.” You are absolutely correct. This is part of the reality of the world around you. No one, except the misinformed, thinks otherwise. You’ve briefly touched on the theory of Civil Society. The notion itself has made its way back into the limelight recently because of the seeming need for a global civil society. It is indisputably part of the western tradition and puts an emphasis on individualism, absence of feudal or semi feudal constraints, freedom of association, liberty, participatory and pluralist politics, and middle-class, entrepreneurial, and free market economics. "To enact change we must empower every individual with the responsibility to all individuals... that is THE mentality that allows for peace, any form of government is useless without people who follow it.” Fortunately, this is already part of the reality of the western life. Every individual, by virtue of Civil Society, shares a responsibility to one another. The same responsibility that you think ought to be adopted. That is part of the reality of the world today, not all of it. The rest of the ‘what’ of things is answered by the thinkers I’ve already mentioned in this thread. Fortunately, so is the why. As I said, and will continue to say ... the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ are already answered sufficiently to maintain a liberal democracy. If you want to change things, all that is left, all that is necessary, is ‘how’
Why do you keep circling solely around the governmental why? There is much more to the world Why does not merely concern western society, or anyone specific... it concerns everyone. It goes well beyond that, my responsibility today is to everyone who will ever live after this day... thats what I mean when I refer to what must be done before peace can be established, not funding a road so you can drive on it... much more significant than that. There is no official answer to why.. this is why it must always be asked. As you continue to ask why, the picture gets bigger and understanding of the world around you grows... this is why the question of why falls upon deaf ears - we are conditioned to not care about the world around us by not truly understanding its inner workings. Ignorance alleviates responsibility, which alleviates peace Perhaps the current what and why are good enough for you and liberal democracy... but I am far from satisfied. I can ask whats going on all day, and recieve a conglomeration of facts and opinions... nonsensical if I don't understand why. in this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124298/ The main character is locked with his family in a bomb shelter since the 60's (or so), he pops out into "today's" world and finally discovers *why* the batter must run to the base after he hits the ball. His father had described the game probably thousands of times, but it didn't make sense because he didn't understand why. A full understanding of what does NOT mean a full understanding *until* why is also answered. A concern with what must lead to a concern with why, or ignorance ensues. Many years back white people assumed black people to be inherently different, they assumed them to be inferior, and assumed them to serve their will. Had those original white folks understood or sought to understand *why* their skin was white and NOT black as it was many thousands of years before, perhaps the world would be a different place. Instead they settled on the obvious what, and many horrible things have happened as a result. Without why anything is a good idea...
