I have a generator im trying to use fro my growroom op. I need to tone down the noise, as i am using it in my garage, and do not want anyone to hear. I have constructed a box 6'x4'x6' and put the generator inside of it. it has a 6" fan inside of it to cool(although it is not working as expected. The rumble is still mighty when ran in this box, so my next solution was to build myself a room around the box measuring either 8'-12'x8'x8'. the problem is i have no idea how to go about doing this. I need help. Please help.

Is this a gas generator, like the $1000 ones you can buy at any big retail store?

Gas generators are EXTREMELY inefficient, noisy, and break down easily. They are not made for continuous operations, they are called a backup for a reason.

chances are it won't last the 3 months you need it to under heavy HID loads. You do realize that just because its a 3000w generator, it doesn't actually do that right..?

    research diesel generators instead.

good god aint that awful expensive to run???

all the shit it gives off cant be good for plants either i would think or you would need hella exhaust system....

hope you are way out backwoods somewhere to be using what ya are,,, to me seems that would be super quick way to get busted ...

i dunno about the breaking down part,, if ya keep the maintenance up they should last years and years even with constant use..i work construction and know several people who use them on a daily basis without much upkeep and have no problems..

as far as noise, you can get a motorcycle muffler and with some minor modifications attach it and it should lower the decibel level considerably..

i have a 5500 watt generator for emergency's and quite frankly i dont see how you can afford the gas to run a grow room..

    seems crazy expensive..

how many watts of lights are you actually using?
if its a 1000 or under i wouldnt worry about your power bill..
even with a 1000 watter going 24/7 your power bill is only going to go up about 20 a month,,if that...
whereas with your generator youll be goin through 20 bucks a day in gas,, or very close to it...

Using on a daily basis, is one thing, even for construction. You're not talking about pulling thousands of watts out of it. We're talking 24/7 use here... i know for a fact that your average Wal Mart brand generator isn't going to cut it.

3.20 a gallon for gas, you'll go thru at least a tank a day under heavy load.

And the OP, doesn't know how to build a room, much less maintain a small engine....

Overall i'd say nix the generator idea.

i agree with everyone else...generators aren't the best idea. at 3$ (or more) per gallon, you'll be going through probably almost 20$ of gas every day. assuming a 90 day grow, that's 1800$ in gas!! even if that is an overestimate, it ain't cheap. plus the headaches of maintenance and fumes, ouch ...it makes me hurt just thinking about it.

You can get diesel pretty cheap when you're not using it on the road, but still.. it's over $2 per gallon, same for gasoline.

Generators are a good supplement, but you can't go big with them imo.

I have to agree a generator for lights would be a bit tough to do as the fuel consumption screams up as the load is increased. I know some smaller ones are used for outdoor grows (pumping water) but they were usually buried and muffled heavily.
