best thing to do is just relax. i had a hard time trying to relax, but as the test went on, i got more comfortable. it wasn't a hard test, even though i'm in the city. just my nerves were fried because the State trooper was pissed off, because of the person who took the test before me and it was my first time driving an SUV (wasn't used to 4 WD or that height). But i just said fuck it, i'm going to drive like i would if the cop wasn't sitting right next to me - i relaxed, i chilled out and drove fine. you'll get it next time Cate.
Aww Cate, honey! Trust me...it's not all it's cracked up to be...this whole driving thing is a joke! Don't feel bad...most of my friends failed their first time. I should have failed, but the cop that was doing the test was too busy talking to my instructor in the back seat about her 6 kids.
Hon, I totally know how it goes. I've failed my first two tests. I think it's because my nervousness causes me to screw things up really badly. In fact, last time, I did decently up until the last intersection when I ran a red light because I was thinking "don't fuck it up for yourself now." You really just can't help but let the tears come. I went through the same thing with thinking I was an idiot.. I came in with self-esteem issues and it really didn't help me mend those. Stress doesn't help it either so I'm sorry to hear you were already stressing. I don't know if I'm the best person to give you advice, hah, but my advice is to kind of let your mind go. It seems like I drive best under pressure when I don't let it get to me. I should schedule my next test sometime new.. it is nice to know the route so well, heh.
I think the only reason why I passed was because I slammed on the breaks to keep from hitting a dog. (The woman had a dog shaped pin on her lapel) Cate it is no big deal. You will do fine with the next test.
I liked the suggestion of trying again out in the podunks. It probably will be easier, because there is less traffic and distraction. Also, another thing, I just moved to a small town in Tennessee from Miami. I could not believe how quick I was in and out of the DMV to get my TN license. The DMV in Miami always has at least 100 people waiting. There were about 8 in the DMV here in TN. I failed three driver's tests, don't worry, we've all done it. I missed a stop sign on the first one, I was so nervous, I just missed it. The second one I knocked over a cone in the parking test, because I was trying to park my mom's lincoln in a stop designed for a Kia. I got my Florida license on the third try, but I failed a test when I was living in Australia, because I didn't look over my shoulder and use my turn signal to pull out of a spot where I had parallel parked. So, yeah, I know you've got plenty of other stress in your life, honey, that is probably a much bigger deal, because this really isn't a big deal. You'll get it next time.
NVM. I told my dad about smaller town driving test plans, and I got a talking to about morals, character, and working hard.
Well that sucks the bag, but it's not like you're going to keep failing the test. Best advice: Practice driving around the area where the test begins. They always take you around that area anyway, and you can familiarize yourself with bad turns, long lights, and speed limits. Get comfortable in that area for driving. You'll pass it in 10 days Cate. I have faith in you.
Don't feel bad about it. You really shouldn't. My father, who didn't pass his driving exam the first time, and not the second time either, and I'm not even so sure about the third, told me that generally, smart people don't pass the first time. But afterwards people who fail the exam several times end up driving very well.
I failed miserably my first time. The driving test (well, here I can vouch for) is not a measure of your ability to get from point A to point B safely and within the rules of the road... its a measure of keeping cool in a stressful situation and remembering much of what doesn't apply to daily driving... this is how many a seasoned driver has failed after re-taking the driving test. In knowing what NOT to do now, the second time around should be a breeze... was for me
Don't worry about it too much, you can always try again. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I passed my test the first time round and I STILL can't parallel park even though I've had my licence for what... five years maybe?
maybe i just parallel park so much, that it always seemed easy to me. i know tons of people in boston who think its hard - and for the life of me can't figure out why its hard. Aristartle gave good advice on getting to know the area. if they do the same course all the time, just do that. thats what my instructor had me do. he pointed the things like the no turn on red sign, which was posted in a terrible position - its actually to the left corner far away from teh red light which makes no sense if your taking a right turn. lots of people failed for taking a turn on red there.
Im Sorry to hear you failed your test... Better luck next time! I also failed my first driving test. Not because of your normal reasons though, I actually passed the test, but I backed up into a cop car in the DMV parking lot. 8( *Shrugs*
