depends on how you define hippie. Yonder Mountain has a following which, in my experience, has many of the stereotypical dreadlocked "hippies", however they aren't always accepting of those outside their circle at shows. Now on the other hand widespread panic has many fans who are relatively clean cut yet open their arms to all music lovers and truly look out for one another.

I think i'd have to say moe. because they are currently one of the jambands with the biggest following and their fans to me seem to be the most sterotypically hippie. They're kidof the generic jamband from the northeast that plays the most stright jam-rock that is associated with phish rather than bands like panic and yonder (or STS9 - but electronica is a whole new deal with a new breed of neo-hippie hipsters) who may have a larger following but seep into different genres and therefore bring in other types of fans. And I'm talking about appearence - theshow has a good point about the way people act, but I don't know if thats what the original poster had in mind. Either way Ive been to a good amount of moe. shows and I've only had good experiences with people. Panic shows on the other hand I've met a lot of unsavory people at.

i dunno from what i here the panic lot is so sketchy ya cant work it like ya used to be able to..

    to many dreadie feddies.

most of the kidz i know dont follow any one show anymore...they will do a buncha different lots in a region not necessarily following any one band.

that bein said i should clarify by sayin the kidz i know are true festie kidz whos life revolves around workin lots at shows,it aint about the band its about the lot an the cash to be made...

my school has an uncanny number of umphrey's mcgee fans...literally half of nokia theatre was filled with kids from my school..

i thought pgroove and bisco were getting pretty big...but i dunno maybe that's just me.

widespread definatey, and theshow is right, their fans can be a little on the clean cut side (my white collared uncle for one).

Actually I'd have to say String Cheese Incident... I'm from Lawrence, and pretty much everyone around here is a "hippie."

Ah yeah that's true. Guess they can't qualify as current.

    Maybe one day!

anyway, there was a good amount of hippies,
but there was lots of like frat-type guys..
    so ehh..

i was also at a keller show.. again, amazing!!!
it was an all day event, & i was walking around till like 2 bands before keller
& there was so many dead shirts/dreads/hemp necklaces at that show :]
but during the actual performance, i was front row so i didn't really see
& like alot of people came later on, ya know.

I find that the newer bads like bisco and umphreys have the worst scene within the jam scene. Theres always some great people, but also so many people just goin to get fucked up/people getting in fights because you stepped on their toe, etc. Personally, not jusdging by what the scenes attire is/hair they have, phil lesh has the best following. Always the best people at the lesh shows.

Everyone knows its Metalica..thats why they booked em for Bonnaroo this year..lol ..YEAH RIGHT.. whoever made the bookings this year should be tarred and feathered and also dusted with 100000000 mics.. ah well B-roo has been fucked for a minute i suppose..

I'm not sure if there is a single band that has the most kids these days..everyone has been split since the loss of Cheese. I hear alot about Panic still but I do also hear about alot of shady shit goin on at the panic lots.. I'm still waiting for someone to emerge as the next Ultimate Jam Band.. There are a few I'm really into like STS9 and the Biscuits but they arent exactly jam bands more like hippie-raver crossbreeds. All the true jam bands i been seeing lately are really talented but still have small to mid-size followings

this scene has been hurting for a long time. its gotten weaker and weaker. shittier bands taking the title as the "big dogs"....and its sad. what was once the third tier is now the main event.
bonnaroo can't have pure jam and ''other'' acts to fill the bill, because there is nothing good enough.
now they have to call in mainstream acts to sell the tickets...it sucks.

the scene as of now is not dead, but might as well be.

Oh man I couldnt diasagree more - I am in love with this scene right now and its alive and puslating. I just saw toubab krewe the other night and they completely blew me away (they have become on of my new favorite bands)- perpetual groove is doing great things (just saw them too) - Jacob fred jazz odyssey is amazing and touring, marco benevento is all over the place playing great innovative experimental music - my morning jacket is making waves in the scene with their awesome live show, I have a feeling new monsoon is going to break into a new level soon, the jamgrass scene is amazing (HBRSB, RRE, YMSB), Derek Trucks is one of the greatest guitarits alive and his band is touring. Medeski Martin and wood are about the come out with like a new album and tour for each season -I don't have enough time to see all of the great music out there. Lotus and sts9 and zilla and shpongle and club d'elf and all the electronic music is a blast. These bands are not all big dogs like there used to be in the scene - but that doesn't bother me cause they're big dogs in my mind. I do agree that it hurts the festival scene - but just go to smaller festivals then.

^^^This is probably the most excited I've been for festie season. From things along the size of Rothbury to little stuff the lineups are looking beautiful. I'm super pumped for Yarmony in August.

As far as pure numbers of fans go, I'd say Widespread Panic has the biggest following right now... I mean they hold the sell-out record for places like Red Rocks, and they attract huge crowds at their shows. I was never into them until I saw them at Roo a few years back, and I suddenly got what the fuss was about. ;) They are really a band that needs to be appreciated live.

STS9 & Umphrey's both have a loyal following, but I think it's on a smaller scale than WSP.

I'll still go see Ratdog show or even a UM show, but I'm only going every so often, and only when they are in town. I'm not going to go on tour with a band that is so 'hit or miss' like an Umphreys or repetitive like a WSP.

It's you that's disillusioned yourself about these bands. They can be fun to see, but they are just average, plain and simple.

I don't agree at all. I am not disillusioned about the bands i listen to. I don't know what you consider in the jam scene but all the bands I like are in the jam scene and some of them i feel is hard to dispute their way above average talent. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Benevento russo, Skerik, The Slip, AOD, HBRSB, Derek Trucks, STS9, Yonder, RRE, MMW, Pgroove, Toubab Krewe. These bands are in the jam scene and I believe that these arew some of the most talented touring musicicans around. And some bands arent good bands to tour with. That doesnt mean theyre not good. No I wouldnt tour with STS9 because their setlists can be a bit repetitive. That doesn't mean I don't absolutely love seeing them whenver they come by. By the way I saw this post on PT too haha.
