i think im going to get dreads, what are the downsides of backcombing?. does hair fall out completly if you backcomb? i want to do it naturally - no wax - but i dont wan't to neglect i need some advice thanks peepz
Not really sure why you're asking this, lol The only downside to backcombing from my past experience is that your hands and wrists hurt like a muthafucka afterwards. The backcombing will not stay tight, it will come out a bit, specially at the tips. If you are not cool with the mess it is to begin with, beanies and headbands are great for hiding the frizz HTH, and also that link above is FULL of juicy dread info
backcombing is less fullfilling and less spiritual IMHO. I backcombed... I regret it now as I feel like I cheated myself out of the best part of the experience.
I backcombed and I dont regret it at all. However, I'm not a person that really cares that much about 'natural'. I just dont use wax cuz its gross and fucks dreads up, not because its unnatural. Going natural IS neglecting, dude. If you want to speed things up, then you can backcomb, or rub some wool in circles on your head. Regardless, you're hair is gonna look like arse for at LEAST 4 months. Almsot definatly longer.
backcombing does usually fall out quite a bit. bit it depends on how long your hair is and what you do with the tips. my hair started out pretty short and all but the roots of my backcombing fell out. my friends hair was at least a foot long and only a few inches of his fell out (i backcombed both of our hair). now if you round the tips off, its not really going to be able to fall out. some people dont like the way that looks though. natural (neglect) dreads look the best in my opinion. and theyre certainly more spiritually satsfying. but some people cant deal with the loose hair and randomosity of them. just do whatever method you like and if you want to backcomb but are afraid of it falling out, consider rounding the tips. good luck
I backcombed, and it helped keep things neater. It still took about 5 months until I didn't feel like a dirty frizzball, and about 10 until there weren't any sections of straight, unknotted hair. I did weekly root rubbing and rolling as well. You gotta psych yourself up for the beginning!
thanks peeps , do you mean fall out as in a clump drops out or as in some hair comes loose ? sorry for all the questions ohh and do you round tips off with a felting needle?
I think they mean the hair comes loose ^ Backcombing DOES cause more stress on the hair resulting in more split ends, breakage, etc... but neglect certainly isn't a path for everyone. It takes a lot to completely put aside vanity and be able to deal with a mess atop one's head for a few years rather than the few months to a year that it takes with backcombing. But both result in beautiful dreads and I'm sure if you backcomb the damage won't be too bad (assuming your hair is healthy and strong). I love dreads on anyone so however a person gets there works for me
