Anyone have any experience doing the workcamping thing or anything similar? Im going to be heading south and im looking for somewhere to go and something to do. I'll just be living out of my tent and just need a spot and a little cash flow. I've just applied for a few positions but time is running out. I've got to get down there soon. Any experieces or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

what kind of work are you looking to do ? How much cash flow are you looking for, , do you have a vehicle or no, how far south are you planning on heading... We are down in north georgia and have a place but all we can offer is a crash spot n meals in exchange for a few hours help around the place. we dont pay n work seems to be pretty tight depending on what it is you are looking into but with a bit more info could perhaps give ya a bit more help

Im a pretty versital person and Im willing to do whatever kind of work I can find. Mostly I like working with my hands. I only need enouph cash flow for food and the basics and I'll most likely just be leaving my car behind cause it will just be an expensive hassle that I dont want to deal with. Just gonna keep it simple. I dont really have a specific destination other than somewhere warm enough to camp out year round. Im not much of a cold weather person.

Ive also been checking into some communes and eco-villages but it seems you have to know people and theirs waiting lists and such.

Thats really about it. Just heading out with a pack full of the basics looking for an adventure and a more simple way of living.

I have travelled to do both paid work and volunteer work. I had a yurt and am building another, smaller one. I do a lot of construction work (carpentry, plumbing, tile and cabinetry) and if you get into the right jobsite, and early enough they don't have a problem if you set up onsite. Once the house starts to look like a house they ask you to leave. But that doesn't ring true with every company. I've stealth camped nearby andnot been caught, but it's tough to completely break camp and be at work by 7 every morning.

Some places you can find stealth camping off of a bus line and ride the bus to work and back to your camp.

Wait - do you mean doing camp work? Like in the forestry or mining industry?

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I guess at this point I might just head down there, start wandering, and see what comes my way. Kinda thinking bout camping out on the beaches of the south or south-east and seeing whats going on. I've been reading a little about the Rainbow family and the gathering in Ocala this year. Kinda caught my attention.

Hey Dilligaf. What's your thing in North Georgia?

we have a small farm in the north georgia mtns. Most of the work here is done primitively because of the terrain. we raise goats, chickens, have multiple gardens of various sorts and most everything we build is made from found materials. We do have camping space available on the land although it can get pretty chilly where we are... WE generally ask that anyone here over three days does a couple hours work in exchange for meals etc. WE r about 10 miles out of town though so without a vehicle its fairly difficult to find work and construction type work is quite rare right now. There are jobs in town but your normal fast food etc... WE are located in north georgia just outside of ellijay.. If you pass on through give a holler out to us and stop a spell we always open for folks passing through... ..Spring here is just geting ready to be plotted n planned out n not a whole lot to do at the moment unless your real into grunt work... iffin ya want a number or addy send us an email... hillydilli@yahoo.com

There are a couple of campsites that I have been to that let you do a couple of hours of labor like picking up sticks and what not in exchange for a site, that way you wont have to pay for the site. Im pretty sure if you just ask the people who work there, you could probably make a deal.

we just got this email last night from some folks. Thought perhaps OP may be interested in this as well as an option to atleast get toward the south and then go from there, would give a bit more time for the weather to regulate before doing the whole tent thing..

greetings, friends! happy new year! patrick and i just returned from a couple of weeks away, celebrating the holidays with family and friends. now it's back to work and...

    WE'RE ACTIVATING THE NETWORK!

as you know, we're building a meeting hall, dance hall, conference center structure here at moonshadow - and if there was ever a time when we needed visitors to help with the mission of sequatchie valley institute - IT'S NOW!

we have gotten to a point in our post and beam construction where we cannot keep it protected from the rain - we have to get a roof on it or the elements will damage the work we've been doing for the last 6 months! this means that we have two-three more months of work ahead of us - the more hands we have, the sooner we'll be ready for rain (and we do need rain). we have all of our materials on site - we need bodies!

we don't just need help building - we need help with childcare, cooking, cleaning - the works! if you can help with any of those things, then both patrick and i can be building.

patrick has been on the phone all morning talking with folks about coming. so far we have a small group of folks who are excited about it - some will come for a weekend, some have committed a week - one just told us he could come for a month! so it looks like we're going to be having fun!!

we are able to pay you for your gas to get here and room and board while you're here.
please pass the word on to anyone you think might be interested in being a part of this exiting project!
if you have a network that you can send this email on to - we'd greatly appreciate it.
we look forward to hearing from you!

after the roof is up we'll have a giant dance party for those who helped make it happen - so join us - we'd love to have you!

    thanks!

    Hey Dilli,

Are you & HHB going to go help them at Moonshadow? My Son, his wife, my new grandson, my ex-wife & her partner are in Chattanooga, 27 miles from SVI. So I'm pretty sure we'll be able to help them....

    Peace,

If you want to be able to stay in your tent while doing work you should check out actual campgrounds. If you can get a job at one they should let you set up your tent to live in while you work there and make some money. Or they might have a place for you already that you can live in. While I have not done this personally, my parents and their friends did this some when I was a kid. It was pretty cool getting to hang out at a campground all summer while they worked there. Right now is probably the perfect time to start applying for such jobs.
