yeah i keep slacking on practising, even tho i completely suck at it. i think i need to get lessons, gonna find a tutor soon, online sucks because you read on a technique and dont have a clue on how it actually looks...

and im getting heavily discourage for the fact i want to play electric guitar, and i have acoustic - im told if i learn acoustic well i will get an electric one as a present kind of thing. so im playing tabs for metal songs and its going shit.

any advice, i know joker mentioned its better to start with acoustic but you try for a few hours, still suck and kinda give up and go do something else for a week. am i lazy or what? i love music more than anything, and would love to play well and be in a band maybe, but it just seems like i will need 2 practise all my life to even be slightly good at it. =/

How long have you been playing Green?
I've been playing classical (acoustic with nylong strings) for almost 4 years, and havent been able to actually play until a year ago when I started memorizing classical and baroque pieces.
It takes awhile, and then one day your just like "OH!!!!!" Usually the first year is just work with no fun

ive played for like 7 years, and i taught myself. I would start learning all the reg. Chords and scales and shit, then bar chords. The electric will come alot easier if you know acoustic

i had the guitar for maybe 4 months now, mainly it just lies by my cupboard. in total i have played it maybe 30hrs, its just a turn off trying and trying to very little result.
when im high, i can sit for hours just strumming random strings with random notes and it sounds like heaven (well technically all music IS heaven anyway, esp. high)

    so yeah. =/

it does take a while before you master the instrument to such a degree that the things you can play sound good too, but please don't let that take you down!! i can assure you its worth it :H

Ive played for 15 years and I have mastered every chord including the difficult Dm76thsus9, which tabbed looks like this:

    --5------------------
    --12----------------
    --2------------------
    --9------------------
    --0------------------
    --24----------------

If I have any advice it is play by what you feel, not what you read.

I've played for a few years. All I did was learn how to read tablature and learnt a couple simple songs that I liked. Then I got better and learnt more. Now I just mess around on it sometimes. I don't know a single chord but I can still play the guitar pretty damn well, and I like it that way. :)

Don't most guitars only have 22 frets? Did you mean the 24 to be a 14? If that's right then that looks crazy hard.

Eh, beginning can be pretty frusturating. Just try to find some easy songs and learn how to play them by searching online, and once you can play a few riffs, everything starts getting easier. I would suggest learning power chords. They would look something like this:

    e------------
    b------------
    g------------
    d--5---------
    a--5---------
    e--3---------

You can move these babies around all over. This is how most rock rythms are played.

Or you can drop your low e to D and play those same chords like this:

    e-------------
    b-------------
    g-------------
    d--3----------
    a--3----------
    e--3----------

That way you only have to use one finger to play a chord. It makes rythm parts pretty easy. Oh, and remember, always keep your guitar in tune. If you want some more advice or something feel free to drop me a message.

well can someone plz answer me a q?

    regular tabs:

    |------------------------|------------------------|
    |------------------------|------------------------|
    |-------0----------------|-------0----------------|
    |----4-----4-----4-----4-|----4-----4-----4-----4-|
    |-2-----------2-----5----|-0-----------0-----5----|
    |------------------------|------------------------|

    |------------------------|------------------------|
    |------------------------|------------------------|
    |-------0----------------|-------2----------------|
    |----4-----4-----4-----4-|----2-----2-----2-----2-|
    |-2-----------2-----5----|-4-----------4-----0----|
    |------------------------|------------------------|

i know 0 means open string, and x means dont play the string, so if its just ----- does that mean i play it open, or not at all? ^ thats a part of fade to black (metallica) so do i strum just the 2 4 0 4 2, or all of them with just the frets on the noted strings held down?

You would just pick each one of those notes unless in the song it sounds like they are holding them. What you're looking at is a riff, not a chord. You would only play more than one string at the same time if the notes in the tab are directly on top of eachother.

Do you guys really believe this? ET couldn't even grab from the 5th to the 24th fret.

That chord is just an E,A,B,A,B,A. Technically you could just play the second fret of the G string while muting the D and strum all 6 strings to produce a chord with those notes but a different sound.

I'm not sure exactly who your post pertains to so I'll answer it both ways.

When playing something like that Metallica tab you posted, you just wanted to pick the individual notes. Usually parts like that are made from simple chords so instead of just randomly selecting certain fingers to play a certain note, you can leave your hand in one spot and play that entire section. I know this is hard to visualize without someone in front of you.

Muting the string is done by placing your finger on the string in some way so that it does not make any noise.

    --------------------
    ------------------
    --7------------------
    --7------------------
    --5------------------
    --x----------------

Say you want to play a power chord like that always keep hitting the low E string. Muting it (shown by the x) will allow you to strum more freely and not have to worry about that string making any noise. I place my index finger on the fifth fret of the A string so that it is not only pushing down the A string but the side of my finger is up against the low E string so it is muted.

I highly suggest getting a teacher. Look for someone who is not just a guitar teacher but a musician. My previous teacher did studio work with big names like Ozzy and Warner Brothers but was also a very talented musician, capable of reading some extremely difficult sheet music. I learned an immense amount from him and because of him decided that I did not just want to learn how to read tabs but learn advanced music theory. If you know nothing about music theory, I highly suggest taking a look at the free lessons provided by www.musictheory.net

Feel free to ask any other questions.

my advice would be only learn what you want to learn... songs you like, and stuff. If you don't want to learn theory or scales, don't worry (but it's fine if you do). Seriously, from my experience forcing yourself to learn theory or whatever if your heart's not in it just sucks the fun out of the instrument. Keep playing! :) If you play a lot you really do start to improve even if you think you aren't.
