    True.But.....

Out of sight and out of minde. You can turn a T.V and a computer off.
What do you do when you come across something you dont wanna hear or see?
And for the children. No fun intended, but That line of thinking is why we had to fight for independence in the first place, and I promiss they were hungrier then .Also why it still took over 100 years for a (FREE Country) to free thier SLAVES.Not my problem soon becomes your next door nieghbor playing with your kids. You probley dont get that last sentence and what it amounts to..Someday you will.

I want you guys to look up 2 phrases that are very relevant to today's circumstances:

    1) "cognitive dissonance" which, if handled correctly by each of us, could lead to

    2) "critical mass"

Do your homework people. The times are changing again and most folks don't even realize it yet.

people just don't care anymore, in the 60's, there was the hippy revolution, protesting against vietnam. well now the US is back in war and people just don't care? why are we willing to let our men die when 40 years ago they would have done anything to stop this.

This whole thread is a sort of second-hand nostalgia for something that didn't really exist.

Hippies didn't invent protests. Go look at the Luddites, smashing machinery in the 19th Century (and its not as if they were the first either).

At the same time, its not as if protests in the 1960s were particularly effective, either.

And now, protests regularly draw many more people then they ever did during the 1960s - the novelty is just gone. Not that 50,000 people butting their heads against a brick wall is any more effective than 5,000.

You want to show how unapathetic you are you go to law school, join up with NGOs, and start lobbying the government.

can i replace the "occupied" for " not thinking" for myself :) if you dont have television with the commercials, things like playstation 3 and you definatly need a bigger tv, pff you know... it keeps you from thinking about the real things that matter...

But you can choose not to, or consume less, or other stuff that is better for everything :)

    why does nobody stand up?
because everyone's too fuckin busy talking about what they SHOULD do instead of actually doing something and telling someone about it.
If these activism forums were filled with adresses to protests instead of people arguing over morality then we would be getting something done, unfortunately that rarely happens.

I do go to protest, but not the ones a lot of people here would hope; In the past year I've been to a tax protest and an anti anti-gun protest.

Many have given up...believing that there is just no way to crack the "system of things". We must NOT! ... I stand up for many things here locally...perhaps others will form together and protest in Larger numbers...?

i think standing up in you own neighbourhood allready helps a lot. Let see what is happening, and be a good example to make the world a little bit better :)

It's hard to be a good example when you're whole society is fundamentally flawed.

because the media hides everything, and most people dont care enought to go looking for it.

some people are trying to make a difference, but its not that effective if other people dont join them. its a whole "united we stand, divided we fall" kinda thing.

No, some of us are working day and night to show awareness of what is going on, what can be done, and there are many good groups out there. However, if your working for peace, and still wars going on, you may feel like hopelessness, like during the Vietnam Era. It take perserverence on all levals, not one day go to a protest, and then what happens. We have had many demonstrations in D.C. against the war in Iraq, and no troops coming home, lies. We need our animals, they have a right to the planet to, and we have to have safe water to drink, clean air, and no toxic chemicals coming at us. There are many businesses turning green so to speak, will it improve the planet, we hope so. Decisions that will make our planet better, with out the crummy wasste, and the garbage. But the ones who ar very materialistic, are lost, and the old hippies who have turn into money magnets, yuppies, and they're lost, Oh well! Good luck in the coming year, Love Yaas! linda

    Right on.

It may seem hopeless, like everyone's too preoccupied to give a shit, but there are plenty of us out there who still do give a shit, and it's cool that we have the internet to convey our message, the down side being that folks are less likely to spend time with each other because they spend too much time on the internet.

It's better to join your neighbor in the flesh, carry a sign in the streets, or engage in conversation with someone, make them think about what's going on.

One person can only do so much over the course of a lifetime, but many people over the course of many lifetimes...

People are apathetic because, really, what can you do? If you speak out, you'll either be ignored, labeled crazy, or tazed, or worse. The US is becoming a dictatorship more than ever. Speaking out holds a great risk. Rather than be heard out, you'll most likely be beaten, tazed, and thrown in jail. Not very productive, is it?
I think it also contributes to the fact that people are in denial... everyone just wants to go about their merry way, HOPING nothing bad will happen. Trust good ol' uncle sam...

People stand up for things, the main problem is that most people have nothing to stand for. So many are happy with the state they are in, and so refuse to see anything wrong with it.

It is very difficult to convince someone of something when their lifestyle depends on not understanding it.
