we all want nice things. but theres a point where it goes too far.

i love my sister, but i hate what i'm seeing her become. her life revolves around her coach bags, louis vitton, vera bradley, chanel, juicy couture, american eagle, hollister, ambercromie, etc.

every day, she goes on and on about the things she wants. manicures, pedicures, new purses, expensive shoes, a $500 cell phone. everything has to be designer. its...well...disgusting. hearing her talk about how much she needs these things makes me cringe. she has no concept of the value of money, except that more money = more stuff.

and god forbid anyone should touch her things. she wont let anyone borrow anything, even her friends. i'm constantly loaning her friends clothes when they stay the night, because she refuses to.

it scares me to think of how shes going to handle herself when shes an adult, out in the real world. i can easily see her wracking up tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card debt before shes 30.

i worry about her, but i'm angry with her too. shes intelligent, and she should know better than to act the way she does. 90% of the time, she acts like a spoiled brat. she constantly insults me and throws tantrums.

i love her, i really do, but damn if she doesn't make it hard sometimes.

Wow, that's wierd, how old is she? Anyway, I love some special things to me, but I don't need anything more.

Unfortunately it's not that weird, there are a lot of people like her... :(. I'm so glad I'm not attached to brand names. Saves me a lot of time! :D

I can relate. I honestly believe though, that she will get out of it. Being materialistic is something I struggle with, maybe like your sister. Sometimes though, it gets tiring. I'm going to bet that she will get out of it. Esp. when rough times hit, sometimes that helps clear your head and the need to be materialistic is overridden by the true need to get back to what's real.

Well, what sucks about it is that you can't change or effect them in any way because they'll just see you as a crazy guy ranting about how material isn't life. And even I've developed some things from some of my more materialistic friend's lifestyles. But I have a saying and that's that you can't change your mind if you don't have one.

    Don't take it literally.

Uh? I don't think I was ranting, I kind of agree with you. Did you ment to quote me?
You shouldn't really push someone to change though, but if it affects you as in her friends borrowing clothes of you because she doesn't want to you're in your full right to tell her what you think, in my opinion.

people who live in this society can't help BUt be materialistic, even if you try not to be....
but obvioulsy some are more obsessed than others and hopefully people realize that family and friends are more important then the brand name jeans and handbags...
i have tried to get out of that by making all of my clothes and all of my necklaces and rings and bracelletes all have sentimental meaning, they are all from my grandma and nana..
i beleive that people subconscioulsy buy things and support corperations by being suckered into society...

being accepted is one thing, but being loved is so much better and people need to realize that having the money and the cars is nothing compared to the love that you can find in the most obscure places....

like the cliche, ... money can't buy you happiness

    :)

sometimes believe it or not designer clothing is better than other clothing
they put more effort into the design and sew it better, making it better quality
i'd much rather spend more on a pair of jeans that will last me

i understand the obsession people have with materialistic things
but you just have to ask them why
being down on a designer handbag because it costs alot compared to some cheap ass piece of crap just because of the "principle" is inane
designer handbags are way over priced, but they're way better quality
and they're manufactured in a better environment (sometimes)
my suggestion to anyone, materialistic or not, be an informed consumer

If you can't change her, you can only hope she could afford that lifestyle in the future..

no no , it does make sense im not going to buy my clothes from like a bargan store.. because in a few washes they will just melt.. but! with a HUGE BUT... there IS NO reason so have some flashy label, you the consumer is a walking advertisement which is therefore washing you into soceity and you therefore are no long an individual...

theres this awesome quote on family guy lol, from stewy and hes like.
"im going to use stuff that other people do and make to show off my individuality"

but comon there hand bags.. do you really need a thing that holds ur wallet and cell phone or w/e.. that sturdy..

to sum it all up.. just make it urself! then u know its made in a good environment and ur not some advertisement!

The older I've gotten, the less I want.

I own little in the way of "stuff" anymore.

    Why its downright unAmerican. :)

To live in the world center of materialism and desire none of it. That is my state.

Its not a bad place to be.
