Maybe I should just pass this thread up because if I start talking about guitars, I know sooner or later I'll be typing a 10000 word essay on guitars.

GRETSCH!! get a lower priced guitar first though just in case you dont like playing or if you fingers get chopped off and you cant continue playing.

Gretsch White Falcon and Gretsch Black Falcon... I love the two to death... but at the time I only had about $2000 to spend I so just got a Les Paul... a '83 Fender Champ with a speaker with reversed polarity seems to get the sound of a Gretsch well...

Dude! Sick! "Only 2000$"? I had like $100 and I bought an electric which I still play (3 years now) and I got a 30W Crate amp only several months later. Fuck, I have like this Les Paul copy which is pretty close to the original in sound n stuff, but well... if you buy your guitar for freeking thousand and also a damn Fender moster combo, that's wrong, at least considering that some folks dream 'bout having any kind of $10 guitar! :p , sorry, it's like this "...while kids in africa starve!" talk :-/
I mean - you shouldn't really spend like more then those $100 or so on your first electric!

Actually... I have a Fender Cyber Twin, but I have an 83 Champ setting on it... then I've got a Fender Strat... I did have a '57 Reissue which I sold and a standard strat which I sold.... then I have a telecaster that I built myself out of a toilet seat. And a '73 Martin D-35. My first guitar was an old Gibson L-00 that was falling apart that I inherited from my great-grandfather..., a $130 Sears Silvertone... and a Strat built that was made out of spare bits and pieces.

i have an old jackson that plays very well and very comfertably, and an epi les paul jr. would be a great starter.

evryone starts on strats for some strange reason, i find them very hard to play. when you're starting out.

I find most guitars to be pretty much the same as far as playability.. but that's just me... as long as I have a nice bluesy overdriven tone, neck doesn't matter much to me.

i play electric guitar, i dont feel theres too much difference between guitars, but things to check for are body shape, does it lay against you comfortably, are the strings easy to play and echo nicely?

as for amp, id recomend something that has nice distortion, and isn't too big, cause you're probably gonna be lugging it around to show your friends:), as for sound fx if you want to go for it, i have one with like 6 different modes and different effects, but if your not real into that, you could just buy pedals later.

    and dont forget picks:p

There's a big difference between guitars. And if you get an amp big enough you have caster wheels (my cyber twin does anyway)... most amps have a gain channel anyway.... and if you want effects get a Line 6 POD for starters... they're popular and will sell for more if you ever wanted to start an effects chain... and I wouldn't worry about picks... they're only like... $2.50 for a dozen...

As for starting acoustic or electric... I started with acoustic... I find myself a better electric player because of it and I've always played .14 guage strings... on the les paul I've played up to .16 flatwound jazz strings... at one point I tried Ernie Ball Extra Slinky .008s but I kept breaking them because I'm used to using telephone cables... :p So I play .13s at the moment... Most people say electric is easier to start on... but electric guitars spoil you way too much... and "pressing down easily on the strings" also known as action, can be set no matter what guitar... I've done an endless number of set ups... should only take a few minutes for someone with a brain.... you just turn the screw and adjust the saddles on electric a hair and do a twelth fret harmonic on EADGBE until they are precise... I can do it by ear pretty well... I don't usually use my rack tuner... it's a pain in the ass... or if you have a Gibson style tailpiece and ABR-1 or Nashville bridge you have thumbscrews and posts as well... I prefer Les Pauls with tailpieces or bigsbys.... nothing to do with playability, it's just that strat tremolos are pieces of shit and leo fender outdid himself with that one. I don't like the modern paper thin tremolos... I like the gigantic vintage style... ok.. I'll shut up... most of you probably don't have a clue as to what I'm talking about.... :(

EDIT: And oh, forgot to mention... you probably won't have to deal with trapeze bridges though... so I'll just leave that out... not too many use those style.. or cadillac tailpieces... only Gretsch... I doubt you'll get a Gretsch.... I want one though.... most people think they're a pain in the ass but it's my favorite hollowbody sound. If you get an acoustic and it needs a set up, just let a luthier do it for you... I've never really trusted many guitar techs though... the majority don't know a damn thing about hollowbodies or acoustics.... so... ask a guitar shop for a local luthier if you need to do an acoustic set up... there really isn't much to it... just sanding down the bridge and once in a while the nut (depends of your height preference for the strings) but I've seen people screw up badly... ended up having to reglue bridges... go to http://www.frets.com and you may understand more of what I'm talking about... Frank Ford is probably one of the best luthiers I know of... so you can trust every word on his website.
