i see two sides to graffiti vandalism and really complex designs that are colorfull and pretty what do you think ???
Well of course it depends on the picture itself. But if its a statement or artistic then yes..even on my grandmothers house.
Not quite art. I feel like art is something you can showcase, display, if it's something you have to sneak around and do it seems less like art. If it's the type of "Tagging" that does nothing but promote a person, is that really art? If it is on an old womans house is that art? Or if it is on a car is that art? It's more like self promotion. Not that I mind self promotion OF ART, but if you just "tag" to promote yourself, that isn't art. No one just paints, to promote themselves.
It's still art, BUT the canvas does matter, it's not cool to go spray paint your art on someones house or business.
I try not to think of anything as "art" or not since everything can be considered art if you look. Some things just move me and others don't.
For me there has to be a fine skill through which the artistic idea is expressed. This rules tagging out and most but not all graffitti.
I've got my own definition of art, "Something presented by an artist as art." I'd suggest checking out DuChamp's "ready-made" work.
Isn't art an expression of the artists emotions or the artist trying to share his ideas with other people? Technically graffiti is still art and can be showcased. Just on a larger scale than a small showcase with chamaigne. Did I spell that right..? Hehe.. Pretty much, I think graffiti is art, hands down.
Agreed. Art is not about simply being or needing to be "showcased". It deals with exprsseing your ideas thoughts and self through various mediums and canvases whether it be the side of Eli Whitneys grandmothers house or not. Now dont get me wrong im not going to give credit to a person who rights "TUPAC LIVES" on the side of a building. But i would bet most acomplished artists couldnt just pick up a spray paint can and accomplish half of what some graffiti ARTISTS can create.
I don't know if this is in part a response to my reply, but that's not what I was suggesting at all. I've been going to art school for 6 years now and I have a huge appreciation for 'outsider art.' Unfortunately, though, much of it is classified as 'low' art or craft because it often isn't viewed with a knowledge of the context it was created in. IMO, its an artist's duty to provide that, (with some exceptions of course.)
Good graff work is art. Bad tagging is not. It's that simple. I love the idea that art is brought out of the elitist galleries and shown where it is most accessable. You walk past a piece and you have an opinion......that one second thought about the piece makes it art. I am loving the work by Mau Mau at the moment. Check out his stuff online. It's very clever.
Graff is most deff art. I guess to the untrained eye its just an everyday thing, but to a writer, or an aspiring writer, its the best shit to ever happen. Street art, it just fucking rocks. Its one thing to sit sketch and paint things on canvas at home and show it off, but its a whole nother world to take that sketch, and go throw up a piece, quietly stealthy and do more and more. I know this is said like every day but go check out some banskey stuff(more stenciling) or some complex wild styles that blow your mind.
